Tonight on The Amazing Race USA… the nine teams travel from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Bangil, Indonesia. Natalie and Nadiya are the first to depart, at 6:07 am. Teams must head to the Antika Jaya Padang Restaurant. “We can go with the stupid Chippendales!!” one of the twins shouts.
ROADBLOCK: Serve a Padang Meal
One team member must carry 20 plates of food and serve them to a table of hungry customers without dropping the plates.
Lexi drops her plates, and the customers cheer. I guess they’d rather be entertained by silly American tourists making fools of themselves rather than actually getting served their food and eating. (Come to think of it, I’d probably rather get entertained as well. Carry on.) ChippenJaymes served drinks in Vegas, so he knows how to carry plates. Not surprised. Jaymes finishes in first, followed by Ryan, Lexi, Brent, and Abba. Even though the twins initially left the starting mat first, they got lost and arrive at the roadblock in 6th.
Teams must go to the Surabaya Train Station and ride to Bangil, keeping their eyes open for the next clue.
The Chippendales, Texans, Goat farmers, Abbie and Ryan, and James and Abba get on the first train, departing at 7:36 a.m. The twins got held back by a lost taxi driver and narrowly missed the first train. Cue Natalie’s bitter stank face. On Train #1, the Chippendales encourage the other teams to not U-Turn each other and to make sure that their group of five teams stays ahead of the other four.
Back at the roadblock, Brittany, Rob, and Gary finish distributing their plates. The second train leaves at 10:50 a.m. three whole hours later with the twins, Caitlin and Brittany, Rob and Kelley, and Gary and Will.
DETOUR: Lion’s Head or Egg Head
Lion’s Head: Teams must participate in a Javanese procession by wearing a gigantic, 40+ pound lion mask, walking down the street, and performing a sequence of steps in front of an audience.
Egg Head: Teams must pick up four eggs from a vendor and head to a local park. A magician will put coconuts on each team member’s head, light the coconuts on fire, and cook eggs on them. Then, the eggs are doused in hot sauce and they have to eat them.
In the first group of racers, the Chippendales, Texans, Abbie and Ryan, and James and Abba choose Lion’s Head while Josh and Brent go with the egg task.
“I think I must’ve made out with 940 Indonesians by putting my mouth on that thing,” Jaymes says. I wonder if the mouth area of the mask was sanitized beforehand. Hmm.
None of the teams struggle, and they each arrive quickly at the Blind Double U-Turn mat. For those of you who don’t know, with a U-Turn, a team can choose to force another team go back and complete the other detour task. With a double U-Turn, two teams can fall victim, and since it’s blind, teams don’t know who U-Turned them. At the mat, none of the five early teams use the power, and all five head over to the pit stop mat at the SMA Negeri school. And we’re only half an hour into the episode!
Abbie and Ryan arrive at the mat first and win a trip to two to Fiji. Team to beat? Trey and Lexi arrived minutes after, followed by James and Jaymes, James and Abba, and Josh and Brent.
As for the other four groups straggling behind, Gary and Will once again are at the back of the pack. They should be called the backpacks. Which makes sense because they’re carrying backpacks on the race and backpacking around the world… OMG. Anyway, all four choose Lion’s Head. After Natalie and Nadiya zoom through the detour and arrive at the pit stop in 6th place, Rob and Kelley arrive at the U-Turn mat. Desperate to get ahead and ensure their safety, they choose to U-Turn Gary and Will (who as viewers know, didn’t have any chance of surpassing the monster truckers anyway). Rob and Kelley finish the leg in 7th.
The blondes and Gary and Will duke it out for 8th place. Well, the blondes are the only ones duking; they scream at their Becak drivers, they scream at the parade leaders, and they scream at each other. And they steal hungry kids’ ice cream cones as well. And kick hungry puppies on the side of the street. (…Just kidding.)
In a moment of clever TAR editing, editors juxtapose the blondes’ rage with the substitute teachers’ repose. Gary and Will encourage each other to just enjoy the ride. Caitlin and Brittany encourage the driver to hurry the heck up OR ELSE.
Even though Caitlin and Brittany complete the detour task first, Gary and Will somehow reach the U-Turn mat first. However, they’re not sure who’s behind them. In a 50/50 chance between the monster truckers and the blondes they choose……Rob and Kelley! But because Rob and Kelley have already surpassed the U-Turn mat, they obviously can’t get U-Turned, so basically Gary and Will’s U-Turning was for nothing. Either way, they have to go and complete the other task.
Meanwhile, the blondes are horribly lost. “It’s so frustrating when a guy from this country can’t speak English!!!” one of the blondes screeches. Not sure what else you should be expecting in Indonesia, sweetie. Their driver takes them to the park where Gary and Will are completing the egg task, obviously the wrong area. They finally reach the U-Turn mat, and realizing that they haven’t been U-Turned, head off to the pitstop.
It’s a Becak race to the finish mat! The blondes, in their cart, see Gary and Will up ahead in their Becak and surpass them. But there’s a fork in the road. The blondes’ driver takes them left, but the substitute teachers’ driver takes them RIGHT! They split at the fork!
And the team who arrives in 8th place is… Gary and Will!! The blondes know they’re screwed. They arrive shortly after in last place, and they’re eliminated from the race.
Here’s the final order of finish:
1. Abbie and Ryan (that’s twice they’ve finished in 2nd place, in just 3 legs!)
2. Trey and Lexi (second place for the second leg in a row!)
3. Jaymes and James (third place for the second leg in a row!)
4. James and Abba
5. Josh and Brent
6. Natalie and Nadiya
7. Rob and Kelley
8. Gary and Will
9. Caitlin and Brittany (ELIMINATED)
