The two contestants that were in the running to win American Idol 2010 were Crystal Bowersox, who was favourite to win, and Lee DeWyze.
Crystal Bowersox is a single mum aged 24 from Chicago who has one son. She was a fraternal twin and used to busker at train stations in Chicago. Crystal is the first girl to make it to final two since Jordan Sparks won in 2007. Stand out performances this season include “Give Me One Reason” originally performed by Tracy Chapman, and “Come Together” originally performed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song she chose for contestant’s choice in the final three show was “Come To My Window” by her idol Melissa Etheridge.
Lee DeWyze also from Chicago and is also 24 years of age. His musical influences include Simon and Garfunkle, Eric Clapton and Cat Stevens. He has already released two albums prior to his stint on Idol. Songs he has performed include “You’re Still the One” originally performed by Shania Twain, “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis and “The Letter” by the Box Tops.
In the group performance days of audition rounds, both Lee and Crystal were in the same group. Lee was considered “safe“.
This year’s American Idol finale is also Simon Cowell’s last show. Simon will be leaving Idol to free up more time to concentrate on other projects like the “X Factor”. The Australian version of which will be on Seven later this year. Numerous tributes to Simon including one from Ricky Gervais of “the Office.
Highlights of the American Idol Finale:
Crystal Bowersox performs “Ironic” by Alanis Morrisett. Then she is joined by Alanis for a duet to perform “You Oughtta Know”
Carrie Underwood performs.
Both Crystal and Lee are presented with Ford Festivas.
Second runner up Casey James performs Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” with Bret Michaels. A standing ovation follows.
Lee performs with the band “Chicago”.
General Lee Platt performs his classic hit “Pants on the Ground”. He is joined by a previous season’s equivalent William Hung.
Paula Abdul gives a speech to Simon. Numerous Simon Cowell Montages follow.
Ex Idol winners Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood all there, with other past contestants including Jason Castro from 2009, David Archuletta and Micheal Johns.
