Jandamarra is the epic theatre event produced by the Black Swan Theatre Company and Bunuba Films for the 2008 Perth International Arts Festival.
This week, Artists At Work's special on Jandamarra follows the production's move from the rehearsal room onto a massive set with seven-metre high facades representing the Napier Range.
In this episode, the soundscape rehearsals with musical director Paul Kelly also commence. Singer/songwriter Paul Kelly jumped at the chance of being musical director. "I remember hearing the Jandamarra story first about 25 years ago. It's just an amazing story, in terms of what makes a good story: it's got politics, war, big landscape, betrayal; the fact that he worked for one side and then switched to the other." Kelly's fascination with the Jandamarra story began with visits to the Kimberley over 20 years ago and led to the writing of his song 'Pigeon/Jundamurra.' In this telling of the Jandamarra story he moves into unfamiliar territory by scoring and conducting not melodies, but live soundscapes performed by the cast.
Playwright Steve Hawke continues his exploration of the Jandamarra story and historical sites in the Kimberley, visiting the underground chambers of Tunnel Creek - the base from which Jandamarra led his guerilla war.
Artscape: Artists At Work: Jandamarra Pt 2 concludes in the theatre with preparations for opening night and features key scenes and highlights from the production.
Artscape: Artists At Work: Jandamarra Pt 2 will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, June 22 at 7:00pm
