It's rock week on Australian Idol. Before we get to hear anyone sing we get a promo with the "Head and Shoulders" confidence coaches.
Matt Corby is first up tonight and is singing
The Immigrant Song
SMS MATT to 19 10 10
I was actually kinda bored by that performance. Mark thought it was too ambitious for him and gets booed for saying it. He adds that it was like watching a Summer Heights High Led Zepplin musical and thought there was too much Mr G. Classic! Dicko didn't think it was hammer of the gods but at least was a decent effort. Marcia thought it was a seamless version of that song. Kyle thought he should have chosen a really good love rock song which would have worked better for his target.
Rock really isn't Carl Risely's thing but he's giving
Clocks a spin anyway.
Call 1902 55 55 62
SMS CARL to 19 10 10
I think Carl has successfully killed this song. There were some dodgy as notes in that as well. Dicko didn't think that was rock at all and thought it was a lazy performance. Marcia doesn't really have anything to say. Kyle doesn't think he needs to put that jazzy vibe through everything. Mark thinks it is undermining the competition to come out on rock night and cop out like that. He thinks he's the Barny Rubble of rock and the Darryl Sommers of swing.
Brianna Carpenter is another contestant who is going to find this week a little different. She's gone away from her Alice in Wonderland look and is singing
The Logical Song
Call 1902 55 55 63
SMS BRIANA to 19 10 10
Again, she's struggling with the song. More dodgy notes but definitely a better effort that Carl. Marcia finds that song one of the most angry and confused song but she took it to a different place and she would have preferred she'd stayed solid with it. Kyle hated it and thought it looked and sounded theatrical and that all the fun and edge is nowhere to be seen. Mark wants to know when it's going to be over and wants to be medicated. He just adds that if you're going to be an individual then just sing in tune. Dicko thought it had all the attitude of a mother and toddler group. Brianna says that she can't hear herself on the stage. She doesn't want to play the "I'm deaf in one ear" but she just can't hear herself on stage.
Can Marty Simpson sing in tune without the nerves in
Jenny Don't Be Hasty?
Call 1902 55 55 64
SMS MARTY to 19 10 10
How much more Karaoke are we going to be subjected to tonight? That was another pretty average performance. Kyle quite enjoyed it and likes the vibe he's giving off. Mark thought it was a good song choice but his nerves are playing havoc with him. Dicko adds that he was rushing it but thought he was believable and can't wait to see him in Disco week. Marcia thinks he's doing a really good job but he needs to learn to trust the band.
Lana Krost is hoping to step out of her comfort zone and do something not so girlie with
Come On Come On
Call 1902 55 55 65
SMS LANA to 19 10 10
She's cute but not very energetic or into the song. She's looking quite reserved. Mark thought it was good seeing her try to attack it but it wasn't comfortable to watch and it was about as edgy as Dicko's jaw line. Dicko thought it was a real improvement but light years away from the original. He was hoping for a roaring tiger but they got a meow. Marcia complains that she has acting behind her but feels let down by her performance. Kyle says that the disappointing thing is that off the stage she is sexy, confident, fun and exciting to be around but they never see that on stage.
Jacob Butler is hopefully going to offer some rock tonight with
Morning Glory.
Call 1902 55 55 66
SMS JACOB to 19 10 10
It's ok but I would rave about it. Best and most energetic performance so far but vocally it was average. Dicko thinks he's turning into a great lead artist for a british tribute band and that he looks like a knob running around like that. Marcia loved it. Kyle thought he was the first person to come out and rock it. After a spat between Kyle and Dicko trying to convince Jacob that he's the only one he should be listening to, Mark gets to speak and says that he loved it but thinks he needs to work on the nuances.
Tarisai Vushe is going to show a completely different side to her with
Hard to Handle
Call 1902 55 55 67
SMS TARISAI to 19 10 10
The best performance and vocal so far tonight without a doubt. Tarisai just smoked the competition with that performance. Marcia had so much fun and never knows what to expect from her. Kyle loves her a little bit more every week but didn't think it was her best to date. Mark really likes her committment and approach to what she does. Dicko thought it started off as Australian Idol and ended up as the search for Africa's next tele-evangelist with all the moving among the people in a mysterious way.
Ben McKenzie isn't really a rocker but we're about to find out with his song choice
Bodies
Call 1902 55 55 68
SMS BEN to 19 10 10
Ben has a great voice. If only he could lift his performance and use that huge stage a little more than jumping up and down on the Australian Idol logo. Kyle thought he was a rock solid performer with a fairly good performance. Mark thinks he's a real puzzle with his great voice but he needs to give them magical performances. Dicko thought it was a more feminine performance than he's use to and thinks he's more rock than Bindy Irwin. Marcia thought it was the first time she's seen him uncomfortable on the stage but he still did good.
Daniel Mifsud has been looking forward to performing
Fire. What would rock night be without some Hendrix?
Call 1902 55 55 69
SMS DANIEL to 19 10 10
Daniel is certainly having a fun time performing one of his all-time favourite songs. His voice was good and it was entertaining to watch. Mark thought he really lit up the stage and hit quite a few ladies' "on buttons" but can't wait until he performs a romantic number. Dicko thought picking Hendrix was brilliant and expects to see him next week. Marcia loved watching him enjoy himself on stage. Kyle thought it was very Donny Osmond does rock and roll and almost had a church feel and it shouldn't have. Relatively good but a little bit too tattooed.
Natalie Gauci is hopefully going to unleash her rock side with
Sweete Child of Mine
Call 1902 55 55 70
SMS NATALIE to 19 10 10
She started off well but once the song kicked in it lost something. Natalie's voice is certainly not suited to this style of music. Dicko is thankful that Guns and Roses never auditioned Vanessa Carlton as their lead singer and isn't sure why she picked that song. Marcia liked what she did. Kyle says that what he's annoyed with is that rock night is always too underdone. He just wishes they'd pick good songs and nail them. Mark loved the start but thought she lost the tuning and thought it was a big disappointment.
Finally tonight is Mark Da Costa who is singing some
AC/DC with High Voltage
Cal 1902 55 55 71
SMS MARK to 19 10 10
Mark looks and sounds like a star. Great way to end the show. Marcia thinks he looks sharp. Kyle thinks it takes someone special to wear skinny jeans - rock men and gay men. He was glued to his performance. Mark thinks he's a great rock singer but thought he looked too comfortable up there and was too conservative. Dicko finishes off saying that it took 11 performances to get one worthy of the name.
My bottom three, Brianna Carpenter, Marty Simpson and Carl Risely. Going home? Brianna.
