Top 8 perform British hits

It's the hits of the British tonight. How ironic is that after the English kicked Australia out of the Rugby World Cup last night?

Dicko assures us that this wasn't a planned programming stunt to have Brit night after the world cup game.

Let's get into the music.

Carl Risely is first up performing the Michael Buble version of Michael Bublé - It's Time - Can't Buy Me Love Can't Buy Me Love
Call 1902 55 55 61
SMS CARL to 19 10 10

Once again Carl is performing in his standards style. This isn't my favourite performance he's given so far and it sounds a little messy. Mark thought it was a great way to start the show and thought his higher range was much better but he'd like to see him sing a slower ballad. Dicko thought it would be a good choice but it ended up being a new genra - snuff jazz. Marcia agrees with Mark about him sticking true to who he is. Kyle thought it was nice but he'd hate to see him sing a ballad but thought it was more of a filler song and a little bland.

Tarisai Vushe is singing her own version of Queen's Queen - Greatest Hits - Somebody to Love Somebody to Love
Call 1902 55 55 62
SMS TARISAI to 19 10 10

The start was really nice but there is something about Tarisai's voice that just bugs me. The more I listen to her, the more her voice sounds affected. She also sounds like she is straining her voice at the end of the song. Dicko asks why it's a story about her life because she really connected with that song tonight after previous weeks criticism. Marcia loves her. Kyle thinks she's still a star and loves her and that she should look over towards him if anyone is bugging her. Mark goes crazy and says she ripped the roof off and throws her a touch down.

Ben McKenzie sings an old Oasis favourite - Ryan Adams - 100 Essential Love Songs - Wonderwall Wonderwall
Call 1902 55 55 63
SMS BEN to 19 10 10

WOW! That was beautiful. What a great arrangement. Thoroughly enjoyed that performance. Marcia really loves the air and light and shade in his voice. Kyle talks about the shell of a geek thing again but he's growing from week to week and he was totally hooked in. Mark says it is so admirable to show off his collection of songs and gives him some advice on improving his range. Dicko wishes he hadn't done that song as it was taking a Gallagher brothers song and turning it into a credits song for a Disney movie.

Marty Simpson is performing The Kooks The Kooks - Inside In Inside Out - Naive Naive
Call 1902 55 55 64
SMS MARTY to 19 10 10

I've never liked this song and Marty isn't changing my opinion with his version. Kyle thinks he's got one of the more interesting voices in the competition but that wasn't one of tonight's blowout performances. Mark thinks he's getting more relaxed on stage but he's still all around the tempo and is having his own Marty Party. Dicko thinks he's got one of the greatest and most unique voices in the competition but he doesn't want Australia to vote for him any more because he thinks Australian Idol is bringing him down and holding him back. Marcia thought that was the most comfortable he's looked on the stage.

Is it just me or is that incredibly rude of Marty to not want to be there? How would any of those who just missed out on a spot in the Top 12 be feeling hearing that unappreciative attitude?

Jacob Butler has been gagging for Brit Pop night and is sing a Beatles classic Paul McCartney - Back In the World - Let It Be Let It Be
Call 1902 55 55 65
SMS JACOB to 19 10 10

This sounds like Jacob's thing tonight. He sounds at home but it's still a little underwhelming for me. Mark thinks it is a really tough song and really shows up the singer. Dicko thought it was his second good performance in as many weeks but thought he should have chosen something that would have showcased him as an artist. Marcia thought a tone down would have been a bit better. Kyle wasn't bored and thinks he would have got a few ticks this week.

Daniel Mifsud is performing one of my all time favourite songs, The Police - The Police - Message In A Bottle Message In A Bottle
Call 1902 55 55 66
SMS DANIEL to 19 10 10

It's always hard convincing fans of an original song when it's not done to same level. It was a valiant effort but I'm not sure I liked it. Dicko says it means a lot to him and thought it was another case of rearranging it within an inch of his life. Marcia thought that that was what Australian Idol was about. Marcia and Dicko argue about what you should be doing and how far you should go. Marcia thinks that sometimes you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Kyle thinks he ticks all the boxes but there is something there that he doesn't like but he can't pick what it is. Mark thinks he's developing really well and his midrange and falsetto is much better. He thinks that, along with Tarisai, he feels his way through a song and he really liked the arrangement and completely disagrees with Dicko.

Natalie Gauci is singing Amy Winehouse's Karaoke - Ameritz - Karaoke - Amy Winehouse - Rehab Rehab
Call 1902 55 55 67
SMS NATALIE to 19 10 10

I just can't find myself liking Natalie tonight. Overall, I'm starting to feel a little let down by some of these song choices. Marcia thinks she looks outstanding but implies that it was karaoke? Kyle seriously thinks she did too good a job of the song and was too nice looking and sweet for the song. Mark so wants her to do something special but felt that was like Snow White going to rehab. Dicko doesn't know why she chose that song and doesn't think she can relate. Natalie replies and thinks the song is an anthem and is about music taking you where you want to go.

Matt Corby has a strange song choice with The Verve - Urban Hymns - Bitter Sweet Symphony Bittersweet Symphony
Call 1902 55 55 68
SMS MATT to 19 10 10

Just when I think Matt has made a bad song decision he pulls something out and proves how much of a star he is all over again. It's a fresh arrangement to a song that has been well and truly overplayed. Kyle says he's a ready made world wide star and there should be a warning on televisions before he comes on the screen. Mark says that when he hit that note it was the money note and it's earnt him another touchdown. Kyle says that he'd made a deal with Mark backstage earlier that if he thought Matt was that good that he'd pull down the zip on his trekkie uniform. The crowd starts chanting Zip Zip Zip. Dicko says he wants to push him even further and thinks it was sweet but not bittersweet and wants to see some personality because at the moment he's just a himbo. Marcia truly thinks he's outstanding.

Bottom three for me tonight would be Jacob Butler, Marty Simpson and Natalie Gauci with Natalie possibly being the one being shown the door.

Who do you think is going tonight coco?

Great review, I agree with just about all of it.

Didn't like much what Natalie did with Rehab, vocally very good, but a bit too cheesy for me. I consider her quite safe though, her fan base will keep her in the comp. I notice you've put her bottom 3, I'd be very very surprised....

And though Daniel's arrangement was a bit overdone, that was IMO his best performance all year. Much prefer it to his T/D one last week.

Matt blew me away (again!!). IMO the true t/down of the night, Tarisai was good (better than she has been in most other weeks), but comparing the 2... no comparison. Kyle's comments to Matt (potential worldwide superstar) said it all really.
