Here’s what is happening on Seven for the much of the rest of summer.

Beat The Star fills in the timeslot vacated by The Amazing Race, 7.30pm Thursday From Dec 23. It remains on every Thursday until Thur Jan 13.

From Sun Dec 26, over 4 Sundays at 6.30pm, is the special Billy Connolly: Journey To The Edge of the World, in which Billy Connolly journeys through the remote regions of Canada and into the Arctic Circle. Note the last Vicar of Dibley special on Seven airs Sun Dec 19, 6.30pm.

Border Patrol, Coast Watch and Bones all remain on Sunday nights from 7.30 until Jan 16. Bones fans receive a special treat, with a double episode on the night of Sun Jan 16.

On Sun Dec 26 and Sun Jan 2, repeats of the Castle at 9.30 are replaced with movies Species and Derailed respectively.

The spectacular special Journey to the Edge of the Universe airs at 10.30 Monday Dec 27 – over just one hour. I thought I saw it as a two hour show on National Geographic a few years ago. Perhaps cut down? Still, well worth watching for the imagery.

The last Under the Hammer for now airs Wed Dec 29 at 8pm.

The final of ICU is at 8pm Mon Jan 3.

One of the few new international shows screening anywhere over summer – Outlaw continues at 9.30pm Mondays, with an extra episode on Sunday Jan 9 before its final at 9.30 Monday Jan 10.

Travel show High Road, Low Road – having being forced out of Saturday nights to avoid a conflict with sponsors of No Leave, No Life premieres 8pm Wed Jan 5. The first episode covers LA and Palm Springs, the second, airing Jan 12, covers New York. The third which will cover New Zealand’s North Island won’t be seen until after the Australian Open tennis, maybe on a Saturday night but that is to be confirmed.

No Leave, No Life, has its final episode for series 2 on Saturday Jan 15, at 6.30pm.

The final of the US version of Minute to Win It will air 7.30 Tue Jan 11.

From Mon Jan 17, the Australian Open airs on Seven from 11am – 6pm daily, as well as from 7pm at night for the first week. The tournament concludes on Sun Jan 30 with the Men’s Final. While the Australian Open is on, the morning news moves to 10.30, while 9am – 10.30am are occupied with children’s programming. Areas not on AEDT check local guides closer to the dates. News and Today Tonight remain 6pm – 7pm weeknights.

Home and Away returns Monday January 24, 2011 at 7pm, coinciding with the second week of The 2011 Australian Open. Weekday night time sessions therefore start at 7.30pm as a result.

All times and information here based on Sydney market.

So, another season of The Amazing Race concluded last night on Seven. Well done to Nat and Kat, the first all girl team to win the $1,000,000 prize. The TV hosts in second place were also an all girl team.

Sadly though, as I sat down to watch The Amazing Race last night, I already knew who won it. Not because I had looked it up, or been spending time on US TV web sites, but because some inconsiderate person posted the winner in a comment on Throng a few days ago.

As a major contributor to the Throng web site, I also moderate comments, un-publishing any that are offensive, that are trying to promote other web sites, are unrelated to our web site and any that are considered spoilers giving away winners or significant information about shows yet to air in Australia that have aired overseas.

Naturally, I took down the comment of who had won the Amazing Race immediately – but obviously, for me, the damage was done.

The rules here, like any other Australian TV web site, are simple. If a show has aired in Australia, then it is OK to comment on the show – even if it has not yet aired in WA where they are currently 3 hours behind. It is OK to congratulate the winners, discuss the plot, what ever you see fit – so long as it has aired in Australia.

If it has not aired in Australia – whether we are a a few hours behind, a few days behind or a few months behind as is often the case – then discussion on such a show is a no-go zone. It is unfair to those who enjoy visiting the site that do not wish to know in advance outcomes of shows yet to air.

Those who chose to watch shows “by other means” before they air in Australia or visitors to Throng from outside of Australia should keep spoilers to themselves – do not put any such information into a comment on any post on Throng. Anyone who wants to know who won the Amazing Race or Survivor or any similar show before it airs in Australia can easily do so – there are plenty of sites in the US where you can find out or even engage in discussion. Twitter at times will give it away when you see topics trending as these shows air in the US.

Here, if you know before it airs in Australia, keep it to yourself – please. Show some respect for fellow readers who don’t want to know, and don’t want to stumble upon this sort of information while browsing around Throng.

Some of these people will even go to great lengths to avoid certain overseas web sites just so they don’t stumble upon the information – so putting it under their noses in comments on Throng is downright disrespectful.

Thursday December 16, 2010.

It’s good to see the last remaining episodes of NEW content on Ten in Rush and Recruits make the top two non-news shows for the night while the Ashes made top 10 despite Australia’s current state, which in turn helped Warnie bounce back to be the 7th most watched show for the night.

The final Amazing Race for season 17 was 9th most watched show while Rake on ABC1 was in at 13 with 648,000 tuning in.

Both GO and GEM again benefited from their programming make overs this week – GO at 4.5% and higher than SBS ONE, GEM at 3.4% while 7mate had to settle for 10th, behind ABC2. Seems the lack of a ONE SD channel is not making any difference to ONE, with ONE HD at 1.4%, thanks mostly to UFC last night.

When UFC was on ONE last night, Strike Force was on 7mate – for one confused moment flicking through the FTA channels last night, it looked like the same show on 7mate and ONE as the rings the fighters fight in look much the same on both shows. Big difference is, that UFC on ONE is in true HD, whereas nothing on 7mate is in true HD, despite being the HD channel for the Seven network.

Anyway – back to ratings – and Nine has won its third night in a row, after Seven had won something like 20 in a row, going right back into the last week of official ratings.

Nine’s success off the back of last minute programming changes over all three of their channels show that few people plan what to watch on TV merely settling for what is on or finding out on the night. Looks like those of us that plan days ahead are a rare breed now, and are being pushed into extinction thanks to last minute programming changes.

Wednesday December 15, 2010.

As it turns out, GEM did not beat GO, but both channels enjoyed a boost thanks to their last minute programming changes. 7TWO still beat GO thanks to classic UK comedy, while GEM was just ahead of 7mate. In a classic Seven vs. Nine battle, Nine – which also was subject to programming changes for last night – won over Seven in primary and network shares.

Meanwhile, Ten was left in the realm of the ABC, levelling in network shares. Shares for ONE may be slightly lower, now that the channel is exclusively available in HD only. ONE was equal last again, with ABC3 which closes at 9pm.

Nine have had yet another re-think about 7pm.

Two and a Half Men will remain at 7pm weeknights – apart from a few nights the cricket is on at that time (excluding WA) until at least Christmas Eve.

The Middle was slated for 7pm, then Australia’s Funniest Home Videos Daily Edition. At this stage, Videos remains after Christmas.

Two and a Half Men also remains on Nine at 7.30 Mondays and 7.30 Wednesdays, as well as a number of slots on GO!

From Saturday Jan 1, Celebrity Singing Bee will be replaced by UK games show the Cube which offers contestants the chance to win the top prize of GBP 250,000 by completing challenges from within a 4x4x4 metre cube. Hosted by Phillip Schofield.

The Cube premieres at 7.30, Sat Jan 1, 2011.

Also that night, CSI and the movie Acolytes are out, replaced by A Few Good Men, followed by Any Which Way You Can.

Here’s the run down of what to see on Ten for week 1 (from Sun Dec 26 – Sat Jan 1).

Despite poor ratings, Rules of Engagement remains on Sunday night for Dec 26. A repeat episode at 6.30, then a new one at 7pm. That is followed by classic Modern Family and the Simpsons.

The Sunday night movie for Dec 26 is Titanic.

More Jamie Oliver in the week between Christmas and New Years with Jamie’s Thirty Minute Meals stripping across the 6.30pm weeknight timeslot. The 7pm Project (summer) continues at 7pm weeknights.

7.30 Mon Dec 27 is classic Glee, while at 8.30, is the Melbourne International Comedy Festival All Star Super Show. Outrageous Fortune at 10.30pm.

Tuesday nights remain the same for Tue Dec 28, with Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation repeats at 7.30, NCIS: LA at 8.30 and Lie to Me at 9.30. Outrageous Fortune also on 10.30 Tue Dec 28.

No change to Wednesday night either for Wed Dec 29 – Modern Family at 7.30, Raising Hope 8.00, NCIS: LA 8.30, White Collar 9.30. Although – there is another episode of Outrageous Fortune at 10.30pm.

Thur Dec 30 sees double Bondi Vet at 7.30, then double Law and Order SVU from 8.30. Outrageous Fortune 10.30 (yes – it’s on every night!).

Fri Dec 31 – New Year’s Eve – a Video Hits special will air from 11.55pm until 2am.

Simpsons at 7.30 Fri Dec 31 with the movie Braveheart at 8.30 New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Day programming on Ten is yet to be formally advised.

Eleven – it’s less than four weeks away now.

Today, Wed Dec 15, promos for the new channel have appeared on digital channel 11.

That means, that as of today, there is no longer a standard definition re-transmission of ONE HD. ONE will be exclusively in HD only.

It also means that the digital channel numbers – or LCNs – for Ten’s group of channels have now changed.

The new arrangement is as follows:

1 ONE HD

10 Ten

11 Eleven

12 ONE HD

Note that ONE HD is available on channels 1 and 12 now. ONE HD was on 11, with ONE SD on 12, but now Eleven will be on 11, and ONE HD on 12. No more ONE SD.

If your digital channels do not match the new arrangement, then you will need to re-scan. Most tuners will pick up the changes and apply them, but others will need a re-scan.

Eleven launches January 11, 2011.

Regional:

The arrangement is as follows:

5 SC Ten

50 ONE HD

55 Eleven

Note that regionals served by SC10 did not have a SD version of ONE.

Maybe it is time that Nine rethink their multi channel strategy?

Looking at all the schedule make overs on Nine, GO and GEM, one can easily see that they are using movies to make up large chunks of their schedules – especially on the digital channels GO and GEM.

Perhaps it might be time for Nine to consider a new direction then?

Over the next few weeks, there are enough movies between the three channels to fill a single movie channel. It does seem that the Nine network have the rights to more movies than any other free to air network – so why not put it to good use?

Movies seem to bring in higher rating shares for digital channels. That is why we have seen GO and GEM have make overs that include at least two nights of weekday movies, and why all the channels play movies on the weekends.

Having said that, imagine how a single multi channel would do in ratings if it was 24/7 movies? The majority of movies are in HD anyway, so why not use the HD channel as a movie channel? Every poll we had run here at Throng suggested that a movie channel would have been a good format for a new digital channel.

So rather than having GO and GEM with no real identity at the moment, the movie channel solution would replace GEM as the HD channel, then all the other content that is not movies – the shows that double up on Nine as well, the repeats of older series, the first runs on digital channels – could then end up on the one channel rather than scattered over both.

You would then see the channel currently known as GO filled with shows pushed off GEM to make way for movies like The Mentalist and CSI – BUT – without the need to push through movies to get the higher ratings, this channel – I’ll call it GO-2011 – could also maintain regular nightly schedules that could include many of the first run shows on both channels that have been “rested” lately.

Shows like Fringe, Nikita, Community, Rizzoli & Isles, Chase, Better With You to name a few, could settle into regular timeslots and nights on GO-2011 rather than being moved about or dropped every time the Nine network pushes the ratings panic button.

You could get back to the idea of themed nights as well, and leave all the more popular repeat Nine content for the weekends or Nine itself. Nine itself could still offer movies on the weekends, but mostly for the benefit of those who still do not have digital TV. Certainly not ever again on a weeknight, as you’d want to keep those wanting weeknight movies on the movie channel.

In my opinion, the line where Nine stops and GO and GEM start have now become so blurred, the brands are losing identity. Replacing GEM with a 24/7 movie channel and re-launching GO as the place for all that hot new first run content without movies getting in the way could be a strategy that would help Nine increase its market share, while at the same time, keeping stability in programming.

Even the new movie channel could theme their movies. Whether it be seasonal, by the actor, genre – there are many possibilities.

Such a channel – given that movies often help lift digital channel shares – would, in theory, become the highest rating digital channel. It would also be a better use of the HD channel, even if it does still end up playing old movies to fill up time during the day.

There would, however, still be the issue of what happens to sport in HD – but, given Nine’s current stance on neglecting sport in HD, it does not seem it would be much of an issue for them at the moment.

With the digital channel landscape about to get another shake up when Eleven starts in January, it might be time to start moving away from having too many general entertainment channels and those that do not have a strong identity.

Looking at what Seven are doing, 7TWO – despite its name – has a clear and distinct direction which is paying off in ratings. 7mate is also maintaining a well defined strategy, that is not being shook up every time they have a bad night.

Maybe it is time for Nine to rethink. GO’s success as Australia’s number one multi channel will be in jeopardy if they do not stabilise their program or continue to rely too heavily on favourites like Top Gear and The Big Bang Theory.

One thing that Ten are good at these days, is maintaining a stable TV guide. They make the least changes of any of the big commercial three when it comes to their schedule – despite poor ratings. This philosophy should transpire over to Eleven. Ten will let the brand build with its own shows without doubling up on content also seen on Ten, as Ten, having a dig at GO mostly, have already stated.

Tuesday December 14, 2010

The run of the Seven network winning every night has finally been broken by Nine. Seven’s main channel achieved a dismal 17.6% share, brought down mostly by low ratings for How I Met Your Mother, Minute to Win It USA and I Shouldn’t Be Alive. The digital channels added 8.4% to the share, but not enough to overcome Nine who had a better night thanks to Nine and GO staples Big Bang and Top Gear, even though Top Gear at 679,000 is still quite low. Nine’s primary was 21.7%, the digitals adding 5.7% to that.

Ten benefited from all things Oprah with the so-called interview show (was more like a highlights of the tour show) reaching over 1.2 million, making it the most watched non-news show for summer so far, other than a new episode of Glee also seen on Ten two weeks ago. Oprah’s ultimate favourite things reached over a million, helping Ten to easily win over Seven and Nine in primary channels, but with no digital channels to help them (ONE was equal last at 0.7%), Ten landed third in network shares.
