THE DIGGER, premiering on The History Channel on Anzac Day at 7.30pm AEST, is a stunning 90 minute documentary film, narrated by actor Neil Pigot, that looks at the history of the digger.

Countries have affectionate names for their soldiers. In Australia, he’s THE DIGGER.

The digger’s story is of attack and resolute defence, of characteristic humour and of questionable discipline. It is also, surprisingly, more truthful than most military legends, more fact than myth.

Australians have fought alongside the British, the Americans, the French, the South Vietnamese and the South Koreans. They famously battled the Turks on Gallipoli and fought by their side in the Korean Peninsula. Australians and New Zealanders, combining their countries’ initials in a legendary acronym, have gone to war as ANZACS.

What THE DIGGER explores as it takes viewers on a journey to the key battlefields where Australians have fought is this: they have never fought on home ground, but from the end of the nineteenth century to the present in Afghanistan, they have fought all over the world, beginning in Africa.

Colonial contingents served in the Anglo-Boer Wars at the end of the Victorian age, and the story of THE DIGGER starts there. The outlines of the digger were drawn in action against Boer, an outline that was almost wholly filled-in by the First World War.

The film follows the digger’s story on some of the key battlefields of the Western Front where most of Australia’s 60,000 casualties were killed. Also uncovered is the warren of Cairo’s old quarter, the ground over which Australians fought “The Battle of the Wazza” – a notorious rampage through the streets of the red light district that did much to cement the Australians’ reputation for ill discipline.

WWII returned Australian troops to Africa – the Ninth Australian Division played a key role at the Battle of El Alamein and we retrace its exploits on that battlefield before turning our attention to the war where Australians suffered and achieved the most – the Pacific. Diggers inflicted the first land defeat on the Japanese, holding them on the Kokoda track but, before that, repelling their attempted landing at Milne Bay, the battlefield from which we tell the story.

The story of THE DIGGER is then brought up-to-date by travelling first to Korea and finally to the scene of Australia’s longest war, Vietnam.

At each battlefield, in every war, individual stories of ordinary soldiers are told – stories ignored by the history books.

The film shares anecdotes, jokes and songs, uses letters, diaries, memoirs and features graphic re-enactments – both the military actions and the off-duty conduct that have created a unique reputation.

With archive material and with specially prepared, exploratory animated graphics, THE DIGGER rounds out the story of the Australian soldier.

Filmed on location in eight countries, featuring reconstructions of incidents and actions from five conflicts, this is THE DIGGER.

A history. His story.

THE DIGGER is produced by Michael Tear of Bearcage and is exclusive to The History Channel.

Disney Junior, a new multiplatform brand and channel devoted to children ages 2-7 and their families, will debut on May 29 on SKY in New Zealand and on FOXTEL and AUSTAR in Australia, it was announced today at the ASTRA Conference by Ben Pyne, President of Global Distribution, Disney Media Networks.

Disney Junior will invite parents and grandparents to join their children in the Disney experience of magical, musical and heartfelt stories and characters, both classic and new, while incorporating specific learning and developmental themes. Disney Junior will launch content across the 24-hour channel 045 (formerly Playhouse Disney), an integrated website, video on demand, mobile and paid download platforms.

Among the new series are “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” an animated adventure combining new and classic Disney characters Captain Hook and Smee (“Peter Pan”); a series of Disney Poetry Shorts which showcases poems for children set against classic Disney animation; and two short form series, “Mickey Mousekersize” and “Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps,” to encourage healthy lifestyles for preschoolers and families.  Playhouse Disney hits “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”, “Handy Manny”, “Jungle Junction”, “Special Agent Oso”, “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!” and “Imagination Movers”, among others, will be part of Disney Junior.

Pyne said: “We’re very excited to bring Disney Junior to New Zealand and Australia, two countries that have always embraced the heritage of Disney characters and storytelling.  Disney Junior in a unique offering in the marketplace as it takes these classic Disney characters and brings them to life on TV on beyond, while encouraging early childhood learning and embracing the magic of emotionally connected storytelling.”

Premiering in conjunction with Disney Junior is the new animated series, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” an interactive treasure hunt that follows the adventures of classic characters Captain Hook and Smee, along with a new crew of kid pirates led by the enthusiastic and courageous Jake. The series, which emphasizes teamwork and features original pirate rock music performed by The Never Land Pirate Band.

Also debuting with the launch of Disney Junior is a series of Disney Poetry Shorts, designed to bring fond memories of Disney classics to parents and create new ones for kids. The series of short-form animation showcases poems for children set to scenes and imagery from classic Disney films. It will introduce preschoolers to the beauty of a poem well read and combine it with extraordinary moments in Disney animation history.

The New Zealand and Australia roll-out follows the brand launch in Latin America and the UK earlier this month. The US premiere of Disney Junior last February on Disney Channel was Disney Channel’s best month ever among Kids 2-5. Year to year, the Disney Junior block is up a whopping 44% among Kids, 55% among Boys 2-5, 32% among Girls 2-5 and 13% among Women 18-49.   To date in 2011, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” is TV’s #1 series among Kids and Boy 2-5.

Australia’s most successful Olympian, Ian Thorpe, spoke today for the first time since leaving for overseas in February to train for a comeback at next year’s London 2012 Olympics.

In Herzogenaurach, Germany at Adidas HQ, Thorpe spoke one on one with SKY News sports host James Bracey about his move from Abu Dhabi to Switzerland to train with controversial coach, Russian-born Gennadi Touretski.

“I’ve known Gennnadi for 12 to 15 years. I’ve never actually trained with him. He’s a great technician around stroke, and the programming that he has in place now and what we’ll be doing in the future is fantastic.” Thorpe said, “It’s a good, solid training base.”

When questioned about his times, Thorpe was hesitant to commit to a definitive number, simply saying: “Things are going well. They could be going better, they could be going faster then again they could be going a whole lot slower. I’m happy with where I’m at at the moment.”

The trimmed down athlete admits he’s definitely fitter than he was when he announced his comeback in Sydney seven weeks ago, and puts it down to focusing on general aquatic fitness before his arrival into Switzerland to begin his intensive training regime under Touretski.

Thorpe will now begin his countdown to November when he’ll be officially allowed to compete again and will be closely monitoring his Australian team mates at this weekend’s Telstra Swimming Championships.

When questioned about the London 2012 Olympics, Thorpe said “It’s easy to get excited about what could be – another Olympics for myself – but I’ve got to take the steps back to ‘lets be excited about what’s going on at training’ and have those small victories along the way rather than looking at the bigger picture which would be competing at the Olympics and getting carried away with that. That can be overwhelming.”

The interview with Ian Thorpe can be seen throughout the day on SKY NEWS and SKY NEWS Multi-view.
