ABC TV and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) tonight announced a new $2.1 million initiative aimed at developing original ideas for a series of factual programs, to be produced out of South Australia, and to air on ABC1 in prime-time.

Jennifer Collins, ABC TV Head of Factual said “It is a pleasure to be working with SAFC on this initiative, entitled The FACTory. We are looking forward to commissioning up to 20 half hour programs from South Australia – a brand new slate of factual entertainment that the whole family can enjoy”.

The FACTory complements and builds on FilmLab and TV MiniLab, creative development strategies designed to support the growth of the South Australian film and television sector.

Minister John Hill, South Australian Acting Minister for the Arts, said “Along with Adelaide Studios’ opening in mid 2011 this sends a strong national message that South Australia is focused on and ready for a strengthening of production activity in the state.

The ABC’s involvement in this initiative shows their confidence in the South Australian industry to deliver.”

Richard Harris, SAFC’s Chief Executive, said “This initiative represents a wonderful opportunity for South Australian production companies. Instead of being commissioned for one-off programs, successful local production companies will be able to develop longer factual series, which will air on ABC1.

“This really takes their businesses to the next level, and once again, demonstrates SAFC’s commitment to getting South Australian talent out there, on the bigger stage.”

South Australian producers are invited to go to www.safilm.com.au for further details. Applications close on January 17, 2011.

Who would have guessed when Glee debuted to audiences in the US in May 2009 that by Christmas 2010, they’d already have topped The Beatles 71 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and only be 6 away from Elvis record with 108.

To date, their cover of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ has amassed more than a million sales while this seasons hit has been Teenage Dream, topping close to 300,000 copies already and beating the first week sales of DSB by 214,000 to 177,000

With another guaranteed season and a half, one would expect that the Glee cast are going to firmly place themselves firmly out of reach of anyone else wanting to breach the record.

And with the constant talk of the demise of the record business, Sony Music must be very happy with this result.

Check out the 102 songs that the Glee cast have had make the Billboard Hot 100

The ABC’s first ever Television News Reader, James Dibble, has passed away.

Dibble made history when he presented ABC TV’s first news bulletin on November 5th, 1956.  A career that lasted almost 30 years, Dibble was widely recognised as the figure of trust that we all turned to at 7pm every night.

Dibble was 87.

You can bet channel Seven will be happy with this!

Network Ten has announced the replacement for the Chairman vacancy created by Nick Falloon who ends his tenure tomorrow.  Brian Long, a member of Ten’s board since July, had previously chaired the global governance and advisory council of Ernst & Young, a company he had been a partner at for 29 years. Long has also been a director of Commonwealth Bank.

The four new incoming directors, Gina Rinehart, Paul Mallam, James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch, take up their roles on the 13th of December.

One seriously has to wonder what goes through the minds of anyone who thinks it necessary to rebrand household name.  I mean, seriously.  Putting an Armani on a corpse and splashing some cologne around isn’t going to change the fact that the decay has well and truly set in.
