Australia’s biggest horticultural event, The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, returns in 2009 with an explosion of colour! Join the Better Homes team as they explore the country’s most spectacular floral creations and support Jason and his entry into the prestigious show gardens competition.

Jason gears up to enter the 2009 Show Garden Competition at MIFGS. This year his design celebrates the best in outdoor living and appeals to all Australian families. The garden features edible herb, fruit and veggie, patches, a magnificent selection of native plants, a spacious and stylish deck and even a basketball ring for the kids! With a little help from Tara and Rob, Jason creates a garden that is striking, user-friendly and family orientated – and we think it’s already a winner!

Joh gives a guided tour of some of the truly amazing displays this year’s show has to offer. She walks us through the highlights from The Great Hall of Flowers and its 24 spectacular floral presentations – double the number of previous years! Joh also chats to Glenn McGrath about the launch of the beautiful Jane McGrath rose.

Graham checks out some of the country’s finest up and coming landscape designers in this years Fleming’s Student Design Competition. He also takes a walk through the best of the Achievable Gardens – stunning examples of the magic you can create in your own backyard this weekend.

Rob pitches in and gives Jase a hand with his new entry. He is going to create a functional and attractive fence to boarder the veggie, fruit and herb gardens – made entirely of tomato stakes! This project is going to be the perfect addition to Jason’s garden.

Tara heads to Melbourne to help Jason put the final touches on his 2009 design. He has asked her to create three round sculptural pendant lights to hang in his show Garden. The lights are to be made from twigs to add an earthy textural element to his scheme. Tara shows you how easy and affordable it is to create a fabulous light made entirely from what can be found in your garden.

BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS is presented by JOHANNA GRIGGS, with GRAHAM ROSS, DR HARRY COOPER, ROB PALMER, ED HALMAGYI, JASON HODGES, KAREN MARTINI and TARA DENNIS.

This week on BEYOND THE DARKLANDS, we take a look into the obsessed mind of violent girlfriend killer William Matheson.

In late 2003, William Matheson brutally murdered his ex-girlfriend, Lyndsay Van Blanken. He strangled the pretty 18-year-old with cable ties before dumping her body in an abandoned storeroom.

That same night he calmly played the cello in front of an audience of thousands. He showed no emotion.

Known for his bizarre behaviour, Matheson would spend nights wandering city streets scavenging for dead animals or sifting through rubbish.

Clinical psychologist Dr Leah Giarratano tells us what led this loner to turn from obsessed ex-boyfriend into a vicious killer. Did Lyndsay’s rejection of him turn him into a killer? Or was he always destined to inflict such unspeakable acts?

In Beyond The Darklands, interviews with those who knew them best – their family, friends, neighbours and teachers – as well as the police who investigated their crimes allows Dr Giarratano to dissect their personalities and ultimately offer some insight into why they committed these horrific crimes.

How did these fearsome criminals come to be – was it their upbringing, their influences or were they natural born killers?
