Sunday July 6
7:30pm

Tonight’s thrilling heat of BATTLE OF THE CHOIRS sees the sweet-voiced school girls of Hornsby Girls High; city/country choir, Espresso; a 40-strong chamber choir from the University of Newcastle; and Melbourne choir Harambee who “cut fully sick” on pink engage in choral combat. There are only eight spots in the quarter finals, the final two of which will be decided tonight. Which two choirs will our judges decide are good enough to move a step closer to the $100,000 grand prize?

Tonight’s show includes performances of songs made famous by Pet Shop Boys, Meatloaf, Powderfinger, The Fugees and Bananarama. The featured artist in tonight’s Mystery Medley Challenge is supergroup, U2.

Our four judges have full say on who makes it through each round of the knockout competition with two choirs eventually going head to head in the Grand Final.

The winning choir will be awarded $100,000, plus they’ll get to record an album for Universal Music.

BATTLE OF THE CHOIRS is hosted by DAVID KOCH. The judging panel features JONATHON WELCH, IVA DAVIES, CHARLI DELANEY and GEORGE TORBAY. PAUL GRAY is Music Director.

Now we have seen all four heats, the School girls from Hornsby seem to have been given a rough deal in the matching up of the choirs.
Newcastle is a very good choir and will probably go far in the comp.
Harambee will probably lift their act now after they stuffed. Some of the other heats had choirs of a lower standard in my opinion. I would like to see the Hornsby team offered another chance if there is a second series. It would also bring some continuity to series 1 and series 2. Maybe another choir could also be offered a second series place.

The medley was not a fair competition and all the choirs performed badly in it. Some choirs had much more complicated lyrics and choreography to learn than others. It would have been outrageously unfair if the medley carried more weight than the top tune in deciding who went through. The choir that went straight through deserved it because they were easily the best overall. They had the best sound in the medley as well, despite the minor slip up.

Can't be a fair dinkum comp if the choir that stuffs gets through.
They are a good choir but if you don't deliver on the night?
Newcastle and Hornsby were good. Espresso had a few patches that were "off" harmonically but otherwise good.

Newcastle is a great choir and they usually do sing better. The young school girls were great. They had so many harmonies in that Fugees song. Harambee's first song was fabulous but the medley performance???
Espresso were so enthusiastic and fun to watch.

Omg, a group who didn't know the words got through because they were the best on the night. Harambee's "venus" was choral/choralography perfection. And Angel of Harlem is the most random U2 song ever, all the other choirs had easy lyrics and easy chori. Like George said, Harambee was really professional about it. Despite forgetting some lyrics they finished completely in time and in style. Hot.

Definitely the school girls were ripped off, but not by Espresso, by the cacophony that was the Newcastle chamber choir. How could a choir that wins international prizes not even sing in tune?

Espresso should have been the first team out! They lacked 2 essential ingredients, rhythm and harmony. Harambee has the most talent and potential and it was the correct call for them to be the first team in. The young girls were the unlucky ones.

I think Espresso ripped off. How does a group who don't know the words get through?
