8.00PM TUESDAY / APRIL 8
In tonight's exciting episode of Bondi Rescue, Hawaiian
Board Surfing' – a form of surfing popular in Waikiki.
Surfers stand up on the boards while using paddles
to manoeuvre through waves.
On an overcast weekday, there are eight rips running
at Bondi. One or two rips is the norm. Eight is a lot
for lifeguards to monitor.
Hoppo goes out to a group struggling in the water.
One of him. Four of them. He must prioritise. He rescues
the most urgent case who is Jason from Korea.
Jason has swallowed water. He coughs up water on
the beach and in the tower. Lifeguards take it seriously
because last year a man died two days after
getting sea water in his lungs. Lifeguards explain
how it can happen. After paramedics see him, Jason
is given the all clear.
The rips claim another victim when an Eastern European
woman uses her remaining energy to scream
for help and put her hand up. Deano brings her back
to shore but she is too shocked to talk. After giving her oxygen, lifeguards call for the ambulance
to check she hasn't swallowed water.
Just when lifeguards are knocking off for the day, two girls bring a mysterious cylinder they found
in the shallows up to the tower. Kyle gives it a nudge and a soft sand runner nearly treads on it.
Lifeguards put four witches' hats around it. When the police arrive the exclusion zone is expanded
to 30 metres. When Defence Force bomb experts arrive they shut down Bondi Beach and move
everyone back to Campbell Parade - 300 metres from the cylinder. Hours later the cylinder is diffused.
It's not until next day until lifeguards discover what the cylinder is and how much damage it
could have done.
