8.00PM TUESDAY / APRIL 15
In this week's episode of Bondi Rescue, Chappo goes out
in readiness for the inter-council lifeguard challenge.
Meanwhile Terry reminisces about the 70s when there
was no hole in the ozone layer and he and his mates
would surf on Coolites before going to a Hush concert.
Lifeguards are pushed to their limit when they are faced
with three suspected spinal injuries within an hour. The
first is a very distressed 11 year old English boy who's
been dumped in the surf. As lifeguards treat him by
putting a collar around his neck and putting him on a
spinal board, the boy's father is still in the surf unaware
his son is hurt.
The second spinal injury is a local surfer who's been hit
by his mate's board. The third is an Irish man living in
Bondi who reckons he just needs a bag of ice. Deano disagrees
and warns him lifeguards treat all injuries to the
neck as suspected spinals. One man who is very glad they do is another surfer Alex who reckons
lifeguards saved him from a life as a paraplegic by not letting him walk off the beach after he was
dumped in the surf. Alex reckons it was the luckiest day of his life and now devotes spare time to
volunteering with the Disabled Surfers Association. Alex brings three disabled people to the beach
for a surfing session. Three of the Bondi lifeguards volunteer to help out.
Conditions for the inter-council lifeguard challenge are rough. The Wollongong Lifeguards take
the trophy they won at last year's challenge through the streets of Bondi to make their presence
known.
When Bondi (Waverley) get a bad start in the race, Bisho and Maxi help Bondi to catch up. By the
time Chappo hits the water in the Coolite leg, all teams are in the same position. Whoever can get
their Coolite out past the big surf will win the race. This is Chappo's opportunity for glory - to win
the race for Bondi for the first time ever.
