On the season final of BOSTON LEGAL, Denny and Alan are finally accepted into the Coast Guard but their friendship is tested when Alan represents a town that wants to secede from the United States, and Denny represents the opposing side.

Although he dislikes Alan immensely, Judge Harvey Cooper respects him as an attorney, so he asks him to represent his town of Concord, Massachusetts. They have decided to secede from the United States because they believe the country no longer stands for the things it used to.

When Denny finds out, he begs Alan not to take the case. Alan refuses, and Denny throws him out of his office. Sack is also against Alan taking the case, and Denny pitches him an idea – representing the United States.
