Don Burke returns to television with the one-hour BURKE’S BACKYARD SPRING SPECIAL this Sunday, September 23 at 6.30pm on Channel Nine.

Spring is in the air. With the weather warming up and the impact of water restrictions about to hit home there is good news for you, your family and your garden as Scott Cam, Giaan Rooney and Dr Chris Brown join Don to share some of the fun and useful ways to tread lightly on the planet.

Most of the water that falls on your block of land goes down the drain, wasted. Don is joined by everyone’s favourite handyman, Scott Cam, and heads to Adelaide – capital city of the driest state in the driest continent on earth – to reveal an exciting way to convert a home and utilise every drop of rain. Using new technology, this technique will revolutionise garden care.

Don looks at the numerous non-native plants that have survived the drought and offers handy tips on the best hardy plants to buy. He visits a young family in Melbourne who have turned their suburban block into a Garden of Eden, complete with fruit, vegies, chooks and water-wise techniques.

Is fresh best? Giaan Rooney visits a busy Sydney Farmers Market to discover why thousands of people are flocking to buy groceries and explores the advantages for you and the environment.

Meanwhile, veterinarian Dr Chris will show you how to keep chooks in the suburbs – how to house them, the best breeds, even how to change the colour of their yolk.

BURKE’S BACKYARD SPRING SPECIAL also showcases some of Australia’s most beautiful spring gardens, and in keeping with the eco theme checks out of the best new energy saving lights while Scott road tests the most environmentally friendly lawnmowers.

I'm thinking that Don Bourke is a huge plus for our nation, he's a straight, honest Aussie who you just know that you can believe. Great facts for everyday people that are useful in todays environment. I only wish that he could be back on a lot more often.

Slightly disappionted with the Spring Special. The interesting water conservation technologies, lighting and chooks were spoilt by the time wasting unfunny routine with Scott.A little too Backyard Blitz for me when I was so excited that Don Bourke's Backyard was back on tele.

Hooray!!! Let's see more of Don's honesty and facts - the real truth! No cash for comment with Don Burke. I know he would not put his name behind an inferior product or environmentally destructive idea. TV is all the better for him. Hooroo....
