Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) goes to an international conference hoping to obtain a list of covert operatives currently in the Miami area. He hopes that one of them can provide the name of the Homeland Security director who burned him. He manages to bluff his way into one of the meetings, and gets the name of an agent before being chased off. Back at his place he is visited by Oleg (George Tasudis), his landlord. Oleg’s best waitress, Cara (Dedee Pfeiffer), hasn’t shown up for work in a week. Someone threatened her, and she is afraid to leave the house. Michael agrees to take the job for four-months’ free rent.
He goes to see Cara, who explains that she witnessed a crime. A pizza delivery-guy rear-ended a Lexus. The driver of the Lexus proceeded to drag the guy from the car, and severely beat him. Cara reported the attack to the police, and provided the license-plate number of the Lexus. The delivery guy ends up on life support, and she is the only witness.
The next week she finds a rat nailed to her door. The police aren’t doing much to protect her, and several creepy guys are hanging around the house and her daughter’s school. First Michael asks Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) for her help contacting the agent whose name he got the other day. Akhom Thabet is an Egyptian spy whose life Michael happens to have saved some years ago. He figures Akhom owes him. Fiona agrees as long as he borrows a car from his mother, as she is tired of stealing them. Madeline (Sharon Gless) is happy to oblige, lending him his late father’s car. She makes him promise to visit his father’s grave. Michael is loathe to do this; his father was a terrible man who beat him regularly.
Back on the case Fiona is guarding Cara and her daughter Sophie. Michael and Sam (Bruce Campbell) pay a visit to the Lexus owner, Alvaro DeSantos. Not only does DeSantos not scare easily, he casually lets Michael know that a hit squad is on the way to Cara’s house. Making a hasty exit, Michael calls Fiona. She calmly concocts a few Molotov cocktails, and easily gets rid of the hit men. Knowing their place is no longer safe, Michael stows Cara and Sophie at his mother’s house. Sam tells Michael that Alvaro is a mid-level drug dealer, and directs him to his high-powered attorney Bruce Gellman. Michael tries to intimidate DeSantos through the attorney, hoping it will get to higher-ups. Instead gets a hit order put on him as well. He informs Cara and Sophie that they are out of options. They need to leave
Miami, and basically disappear.
Fiona has tracked down Akhom. She alerts Michael, who barges in on his dinner, insisting that he provide the name of the man who burned him. Before he can get the name he receives a frantic call from Cara: Sophie has taken off! She wanted to attend her prom, and say goodbye to her friends. Luckily Michael gets to her before DeSantos’ hit men do. Michael decides they need a better plan. He and Sam plant a surveillance camera, and get DeSantos to incriminate himself. They give the evidence to the FBI and they end up leaking it to Gellman, who alerts the head of the drug cartel... and DeSantos is history. Cara and Sophie are safe, and can stay in Miami. For all her hard work Fiona insists that Michael give her a key to his place, and he reluctantly hands one to her.
Michael finally gets his father’s car started, and drives it to the cemetery as he promised. Ahkom shows up as planned, and gives Michael a document containing a tracking number and a code name. Hopefully this will lead to the person who burned him.
