Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) returns home to find that someone has been gone through his apartment. Suddenly a frantic call from his mother (Sharon Gless) sends him running to her house. Apparently Michael getting his hands on the name of the Homeland Security Director who ordered his burn notice ruffled some feathers high up the food chain. He now has a new surveillance team, and they are the hands-on type.
After busting up his mother’s house they tell Michael to give up on investigating his burn notice. Michael asks Sam (Bruce Campbell) if he knows which government agency is now on his tail, but he has no clue. Knowing his phone is bugged, he leaves a series of cryptic messages with various international consulates, hoping to throw the new guys off his trail. Sam hooks him up with a new gig working with a man named Virgil (Chris Ellis) who was supposed to repossess a boat for a client, but the owners got the best of him. Using the police as unwitting backup, Michael, Sam, and Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) easily retrieve the boat. Returning the boat to Virgil’s client doesn’t prove to be so easy, however.
Mason (Antoni Corone), Virgil’s client, turns out to be involved in some disreputable activities. Michael barely escapes the meeting with his life and sizes Mason up as a crooked cop, and confronts Virgil. It turns out that Mason and his men had threatened to hurt Virgil’s daughter if he didn’t help them get the boat. Assuming there’s more to the boat than meets the eye, they take it apart and find a large stash of cash. Michael decides to meet with the crooked cops, letting them know that he has the money but wants them to handle Andre (Lawrence Mason) who is the owner of the boat. He continues to get under the skin of his new surveillance team and after they impound his car and remove his phone line, he breaks into one of their hotel rooms and disables their computer. Furious, the head of the team contacts Michael, but still refuses to identify himself; only reiterating that he needs to back off, and accept his new life.
Andre manages to get his hands on Virgil, and uses him as a bargaining chip to get his money back from Michael but Michael lets it be known that he plans to return the money to Andre, knowing that Mason will show up. His plan works and Andre, Mason and their respective men end up in a tense standoff, allowing Michael and his crew to escape with Virgil.
