When Bridget encounters Cain Harvey outside Canal Road, she never suspects she’d fall for the good looking, but troubled amnesiac. At first reluctant to become involved, Bridget helps him discover his identity and in the process the two become close. Spence tries hypnosis to unlock the traumatic events of Cain’s past, but to no avail. However when his involvement in the Dropat drug trials is revealed, Bridget and Cain become targets – Andrew MacMillan trying desperately to keep the secret of the cover-up.

Finally defeated, Andrew admits to Spence the truth, including lying he had an affair with Ellen. It was all designed to deter Spence from digging. With nowhere else to turn, Andrew commits suicide, Spence realising too late his desperation. Meanwhile with help from Skye and Henry, Bridget learns that Cain has family in Queensland, including a young daughter, and Bridget and Cain have a bittersweet parting.

Mia Stimson is a clairvoyant who claims that voices of the dead made her attempt to kill her father. When Spence agrees to help Steve as an expert witness in her upcoming trial, Spence hypothesises sexual abuse to be the cause of her psychological problems. But,during a series of sessions, Spence suspects she is a fake as a medium, with a dissociative personality disorder.

When Mia comes into Canal Road covered in blood, she’s charged with her father’s murder. Spence learns that Steve is acting on behalf of Daina; she’s Mia’s real lawyer and is using the case to get close to Spence again. Malcolm discovers that Steve is playing him off against Daina and blackmails Steve into sabotaging Daina’s case in order to break Spence’s hold on his daughter. A desperate Steve feeds Mia information from Spence’s Sorrento holiday DVD, and Mia uses this to convince Spence of her abilities.

Holly visits jail to break it off with Jack Logan. She is planning a holiday, undergoing counselling from Spence and getting rid of everything old. It seems she is moving on to a new life. But all these actions signify another agenda. The holiday is a cover, the jail visit a chance to pass insulin to Jack to simulate illness. Holly busts Jack out but things go terribly wrong and she is badly wounded. The crew from Canal Road find themselves playing major roles in this tragic love story.

Thinking a man standing on a railing of a footbridge outside Canal Road is about to commit suicide, Bridget and Tom help him down, only to discover he has amnesia. As Olivia tries to get “John Doe” to open up, Bridget reveals why she has an N.F.R (Not for Resuscitation) tattoo on her breast – she never wants to end up like that guy. Bridget is further annoyed when Olivia gives her the task of taking him back to the address they found in his clothes. On the way, “John” exhibits some humour and intelligence, but Bridget refuses to get involved. As she drops him off at a men’s halfway house, he clutches her arm and pleads – please help me find out who I am!

Skye’s world is rocked when police turn up at Canal Road to inform her that her sister has been murdered. Spence goes with her to lend support while she formally identifies the body and is shocked to discover that on the slab at the morgue is Tanya the prostitute he has been seeing regularly. When Spence tells Skye, her first reaction is anger. Confused by the overwhelming events, Skye wants sex from Spence. He refuses and she feels humiliated but later, when more clear headed she forges an even stronger bond of friendship with Spence than before.

Bridget is on the slippery slope: she owes money to everybody, including her drug dealer. Her exboyfriend
from her home town, Dean, has come to the city for tests on his congenital heart condition.
When he dies unexpectedly, a confused and emotionally traumatised Bridget has a disastrous sexual
encounter with Justin, a 17 year old work-experience boy. When her drug dealer threatens Bridget with
physical harm, it seems her only way out of her descent into hell is to steal drugs from Canal Road to
pay off her debt. But when it appears that Bridget is about to cross that line of no return, she finds
strength through her memory of Dean to rise above it and remain true to herself.
And, when Spence finds Ellen’s laptop that contains an encrypted video file, he is devastated to learn
from Ellen’s former research partner that she was unfaithful to him.

Holly Chong’s relationship with parolee Jack Logan is proving difficult to keep a secret, especially when he flirts with her at Canal Road. She finds him irresistible, but is soon compromised when Jack shoplifts in front of Anna Brock, a young woman Holly is trying to help go straight.

However, the rose-coloured glasses come off altogether when she witnesses Jack assault a guy in a back alley. Jack explains the guy owed him money, but Holly, trying to escape her past of domestic violence, wants nothing more to do with him. She tries to focus on work. Olivia notices her distress and tries to talk to her, but Holly knows she can’t divulge her secret. She does however open up to Spence who tells her she’s not powerless in the relationship.

PRODUCTION STARTS ON NINE’S NEW DRAMA

The Nine Network today announced production has commenced on Australia’s newest drama series – Canal Road.

Canal Road is a medical and legal advisory centre where the lives of inner-city professionals and their patients entwine in a story of mystery and intrigue. At the heart of the series are the tragic deaths of the wife and son of central character Spencer McKay. Spencer is the centre’s psychiatrist who is confronted by the killer of his loved ones and sets out on a journey of revenge which will implicate friends, workmates and his darkest demons.

NIDA graduate Paul Leyden (Dragnet, LAX, Law & Order: SVU) has returned from the United States to take the lead role of Spencer McKay. Joining him are Diana Glenn (The Oyster Farmer, Somersault), Brooke Satchwell (Tripping Over, Dangerous), Grant Bowler (Outrageous Fortune, Through My Eyes), Sibylla Budd (The Secret Life of Us), Charlie Clausen (McLeod’s Daughters, Blue Heelers), Patrick Brammall (Home and Away, The Alice), Peta Sergeant (Satisfaction, All Saints) and dynamic newcomers Alyssa McClelland (Small Claims) and Sam Anderson.
