Thinking a man standing on a railing of a footbridge outside Canal Road is about to commit suicide, Bridget and Tom help him down, only to discover he has amnesia. As Olivia tries to get “John Doe” to open up, Bridget reveals why she has an N.F.R (Not for Resuscitation) tattoo on her breast – she never wants to end up like that guy. Bridget is further annoyed when Olivia gives her the task of taking him back to the address they found in his clothes. On the way, “John” exhibits some humour and intelligence, but Bridget refuses to get involved. As she drops him off at a men’s halfway house, he clutches her arm and pleads – please help me find out who I am!
Back at Canal Road, Bridget searches through a Missing Person’s website with Skye’s help, only to find “John Doe” has returned. Bridget takes blood tests and helps him shave, revealing a handsome guy. She talks to Spence about possible causes for John’s amnesia, and Spence offers to have a session with him.
In the meantime, Andrew MacMillan arrives at the behest of Spence to sign some old documents of Ellen’s. Things are tense between the two men, Andrew and Ellen’s affair hanging in the air, unspoken.
As people crossover Andrew MacMillan comes face to face with John Doe playing guitar in the foyer. John freaks out and attacks Andrew. It’s not clear at first why. Spence suspects John is suffering from a dissociative fugue and suggests hypnosis might unlock a key to his memories, but John freaks and races out of Canal Road. Bridget runs after him and he explains what it’s like to slip in and out of memory, it’s lonely, sometimes terrifying, and everyone thinks it’s because you’re on drugs. This strikes a chord with Bridget, whose own life is frequently out of control. It becomes clear there is a strong attraction between them.
Later, Henry and Skye help discover John Doe’s identity is in fact Cain Harvey, a member of a 90’s rock group. Bridget and Cain track down an old girlfriend who warns Bridget to stay clear of Cain, he’s bad news. Then they are almost run down by a car, Cain pushing Bridget out its path just in time.
Spence suspects Andrew is responsible for the attempted murder and forces him to talk by threatening to tell his wife about his affair with Ellen. Andrew, defeated, admits Cain was a participant in the Dropat drug trials cover-up – they knew there were problems with the drug before the trials but went ahead anyway. Ellen found some old files and started digging around – that’s why he pretended they were having an affair – to put Spence off. Andrew insists he did not kill Ellen but Spence is determined to take this to the police. However that evening Spence is picked up by the cops walking naked walking along a railway track and realises his drink must have been spiked.
Back at Canal Road, Olivia confirms there were drugs in Spence’s system. Andrew was obviously trying to discredit him but by now Spence is more upset he let his memory of Ellen be tainted by Andrew’s lies. However, realising Andrew must be acting out desperation sends Spence to talk to him, only to find he’s already committed suicide. Olivia asks Spence if this means it’s finally over. Spence sadly admits that it is.
Bridget and Cain’s romance continues to blossom until it’s discovered Cain has family Iiving in Queensland, including an eight-year old daughter. Bridget tells Cain and he breaks down. Bridget thinks it’s because he remembers them, but Cain explains no, he’s distraught because he doesn’t.
Cain decides he has to reconnect with his family and both he and Bridget realise the future is as uncertain as the past.
Bridget isn’t the only one with problems of the heart. Holly is trying to remain positive about Jack Logan’s pending court case. She can’t bear the thought he might have to see out his original sentence. At Canal Road, Olivia finds Holly banging around in her office – the judge having increased Jack’s sentence from 2 to 5 years. Holly is distraught and regretfully calls Olivia heartless. Holly and Bridget share a beer and their heart-broken misery at the end of the day.
Meanwhile a gorgeous model client of Tom’s has everyone guessing what’s going on in the treatment room.

Who is the actor playing Cain Harvey? It's driving me nuts where's he from?
