Skye’s world is rocked when police turn up at Canal Road to inform her that her sister has been murdered. Spence goes with her to lend support while she formally identifies the body and is shocked to discover that on the slab at the morgue is Tanya the prostitute he has been seeing regularly. When Spence tells Skye, her first reaction is anger. Confused by the overwhelming events, Skye wants sex from Spence. He refuses and she feels humiliated but later, when more clear headed she forges an even stronger bond of friendship with Spence than before.
Detective Ray Driscoll, Olivia’s ex, inks in Spence as prime suspect when he is revealed to be Tanya’s last client and has no alibi. Meanwhile Bradley Thompson, a newly released psychiatric inmate has been turning up in Spence’s life, seemingly amiable and wanting treatment. Spence had been the independent expert for Thompson’s psych evaluation. While Thompson was institutionalized his wife
left, taking the children with him, now he wants Spence’s help to be well and get them back. But Thompson continues to turn up incessantly at Canal Road and when Steven blackballs him, Thompson reacts badly. Spence gradually begins to consider Thompson may well have killed Tanya to punish him.
When Spence finds the murder weapon left in his office, he is sure Thompson has planted it to frame him. Just as it seems certain Spence is to be apprehended with it, Thompson confesses to the crime. Perversely this makes Spence doubt Thompson’s guilt. Spence goes back over Thompson’s behaviour and realises he has misjudged the man. He ultimately gets Thompson to admit that he only confessed to get Spence off the charge so that Spence could treat him and get him back his family. In Thompson’s mind, he would rather be confined to prison with visits from his family than be free with no family contact.
By the time of Tanya’s funeral, Skye knows her world is forever changed but her love for her sister remains undiminished and she has found a new family in the Canal Road people. Even if a killer remains on the loose.
