Mia Stimson is a clairvoyant who claims that voices of the dead made her attempt to kill her father. When Spence agrees to help Steve as an expert witness in her upcoming trial, Spence hypothesises sexual abuse to be the cause of her psychological problems. But,during a series of sessions, Spence suspects she is a fake as a medium, with a dissociative personality disorder.
When Mia comes into Canal Road covered in blood, she’s charged with her father’s murder. Spence learns that Steve is acting on behalf of Daina; she’s Mia’s real lawyer and is using the case to get close to Spence again. Malcolm discovers that Steve is playing him off against Daina and blackmails Steve into sabotaging Daina’s case in order to break Spence’s hold on his daughter. A desperate Steve feeds Mia information from Spence’s Sorrento holiday DVD, and Mia uses this to convince Spence of her abilities.
When Spence subsequently wants off the case because he can’t totally discount Mia’s talents, Daina becomes furious and threatens to expose Spence’s belief in the paranormal and ruin his career unless he gets on the witness stand. Steve realises he’s messed up, but his attempts to thwart Daina backfire and he’s forced to confess everything to Spence, not only about Mia, but also his role as Malcolm’s mole.
Spence realises that Mia, who has uncannily led Spence to suspect her brother Blake of the murder, is the real mastermind. He confronts her, cleverly getting her to admit the entire plan with Ray overhearing. It’s a bittersweet victory for Spence.
