News

CHANNEL Seven has been rocked by defection of one of its star executives with sales director James Warburton to take the helm of rival Channel Ten.

The news shocked business circles – especially given Ten also announced that James Packer had resigned from the board after his partial ownership raid in November.

It has also left Seven boss David Leckie with a giant hole in his executive team, as the youthful Warburton was to replace the veteran Leckie when he decides to step down.

Warburton will replace Ten interim CEO Lachlan Murdoch, who took over from Grant Blackley last month after rumours of major dissatisfaction over Ten’s 5pm-7.30pm news and current affairs block of programs which alienated the younger viewers who produce Ten’s profits.

What is not known is the reason behind Packer stepping down from the board – the partial Ten takeover was his first major deal with his friend Murdoch since the collapse of the OneTel mobile company which both presided over.

Blackley was only appointed in December after the new and semi-controlling shareholders Packer and Murdoch oversaw the departure of longtime boss Nick Falloon, a former Packer ally turned enemy.

Highly influential Seven executive and news boss Peter Meakin confirmed Warburton’s departure was a major blow for the top rating network owned by Kerry Stokes.

“He was certainly regarded as a successor to David Leckie – but I have to say no one here wants David to leave,” Meakin said.

“But James leaving is a serious disappointment to us all here – he is a good man who is very, very capable and an executive who has been a delight to work with.”

The Ten network announced the news of Packer’s departure and Warburton’s appointment to the Australian Stock Exchange today.

The first guests have been named to take part in Chelsea Handler’s Australian shows.

Aussie actress/model Sophie Monk and Taronga Zoo’s Nick de Vos have been confirmed to feature on one of the four shows to be filmed in Sydney.

The episodes of Chelsea Lately will screen in Australia on E! the day after they have been filmed at the Foxtel studios in North Ryde.

A disgraced Aussie journo has managed to land one of the scoops of the year in the entertainment world when he befriended troubled Two And A Half Men actor Charlie Sheen.

Dylan Howard, who was fired from Channel Seven in 2008 after a dodgy story on doping in the AFL, has turned to gossip reporting in recent years and has since managed to do quite well for himself.

Howard has been close to Sheen throughout the drawn-out public affair involving alcohol, drugs and strippers and was on hand to deliver the news that Sheen had passed recent drug tests.

Reporting for RadarOnline, Howard was in Sheen’s bathroom when the actor took the urine tests and took the results to the media, parading about on a variety of TV shows in the US.

He told Good Morning America: “The good news for Charlie Sheen as he’s watching from home is he tested negative for every single one of those tests. The blood test only goes for a window for only 24 hours. The urine tests for some 72 hours. But this is a big win for Charlie Sheen.”

Just how Howard managed to gain such a priviledged position with Sheen is anyone’s guess.

For the benefit of those who do not yet have digital TV, or only have standard definition digital, there will be an encore of the first episode of The Amazing Race which was seen on 7mate last Sunday.

The replay won’t be until 10am Sunday March 13 – the same day that 7mate will be playing the third episode at 6.30pm. You can also catch up on PLUS7.

Given 10am Sunday is usually where AFL states have AFL programming on, the encore may not last in that timeslot, come the start of the AFL season later this month.

Charlie Sheen appeared this morning on the NBC “Today” show. Talking about the cancellation of the rest of the season of “Two and a Half Men”, Charlie seems to be, not only delusional, but down right crazy. Charlie claims he is passionate, not angry. He labelled his house “The Sober Valley Lodge”, and would not let AA contaminate it. He also wants a pay rise to $3 million per episode.

When asked the last time he took drugs? He says he can’t remember.

How he cured his addiction? – He closed his eyes and made it so.

Are you embarrassed about your kids reading about all this one day? God No! Talk about an education.

Sheen claims he and CBS are at war, because they are trying to destroy his family. He then claims that “defeat is not an option-they picked a fight with a warlock”.

At one stage he is asked what he would say to Chuck Lorre – the co-creator of Two and a Half Men. Charlie looks straight down the barrel and reads from his notes these questions, as he says only Chuck can answer them.

1 = Why is it when I was ready to return to work you told me “There are no scripts ready to shoot” so that begs the second part of the question. What would we have shot if you hadn’t ordered the suits into my home, to shut down my party?

2 = Why is it that you issued a decree, informing me the remaining 8 shows of season 8 had been reduced down to 4, our highest rated season to date, when most shows are in decline then, headed towards Will and Grace filth, was suddenly to halt production 2 weeks earlier than scheduled?

3 = When you were told that the crew would suffer gravely as a result of your dictatorial laziness, would you please explain your statement – quote “They are not my problem” – end quote. I’m sure there’s like 120 some odd people that would love to hear the answer to that.

Sheen then pulls out the AA handbook and quotes about acceptance, even though ha has been condemning AA throughout the interview. Sheen says he won’t follow a path like AA as it was written for normal people, not special people, people who have tiger blood or Adonis DNA.

He claims they are going to rename Warner Bros. as Charlie Bros. and claims he won best picture at 20 when he wasn’t even trying and that Major League 3 is in the works. Charlie says he will go to season 10 but its now $3 million an episode, take it or leave it.

Everyone thinks he should be begging for his job back but everybody else will be begging him for their job back. CBS owes him a big apology, while licking his feet.

The interview continues tomorrow on NBC Today, which can be seen from 4am on Seven.
