Raw ratings figures sourced from TV Tonight and Media Spy and are Oztam 5 city metro figures. Timeslot order is some cases will may be based on average figures over a number of time slots. Timeslot order is only offered where there is enough data available to put at least 3 networks in order at the times listed and is not offered for Friday and Saturday nights due to the varying network coverage of AFL and NRL football and the resulting alternate programming in the opposing market. Timeslot times may not reflect exact times that show air due to network lateness. Here, a show starting as late as 9.45 for example will be considered as the 9.30 timeslot, if 9.30 is the time it was advertised to air. Any odd times indicated such as 8.40 are as a result of observation on at least two networks. Network shares include all extra digital channels for each network. Week so far is the cumulative network share including extra digital channels from Sunday until the day of this report. A figure shown for an individual secondary digital channel such as GO or ONE is an overall percentage share out of total viewers. For example, 9 and GO might be 26.3% together but apart they would be for example 9 24.7% and GO 1.6%. When show not shown in all cities (top 30 list): S = Sydney, B= Brisbane, M = Melbourne, A = Adelaide, P = Perth. Feel free to leave comments and let us know what you think.

Ratings for Monday September 7 2009

Nine news and ACA have come close to 7 News and TT last night, with very little separating them and with 9 winning in some areas.

But the biggest story of last nights ratings is the almost even spread over 5 networks now seen from 7.30 to 8.30. SBS’s Top Gear is 2nd at 7.30 and 3rd at 8pm while 10’s Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader lands 5th for the hour, behind the other 4 yet still rates over 800,000. Channel 7 should be concerned that the documentaries are not doing well on Monday nights now and is now costing them the win for the night.

Farmer Wants a Wife is closing in on City Homicide, but that is more likely to do with the fact that the series is ending as opposed to the notion of the lead in bringing down City Homicide. Next week, Farmer finishes with a double episode. Even without GO (GO was 1.7%), 9 would have won the night last night, and will most likley win next Monday as well unless 7 addresses their 7.30 problem.

Poh Ling Yeow, the cook who captured the hearts of the nation as runner-up on Masterchef, will be the star of ABC TV’s new cooking show to be screened in 2010.

Poh’s Kitchen will be produced in her hometown of Adelaide, and will go into production in November 2009.

Poh says “Entering into the world of food has been something I’ve had a secret obsession with for many years. Now to share my love of cooking as part of the ABC team is quite beyond anything I dared dream of, so it goes without saying that I am absolutely brimming with excitement!”

The show will see Poh travelling throughout Australia on her journey to expand her knowledge of food and to add to her every increasing collection of recipes.

Across the year long series, she will be joined in her kitchen by some of Australia’s leading chefs, who will work alongside her to cook the produce she has sourced.

Jennifer Collins, ABC TV Head of Factual said “Poh brings a natural curiosity, a warmth, an honesty and a terrific sense of humour to the screen. She will share her unique, innovative and exciting approach to food and I’m sure will continue to surprise us.”

The series will be Executive Produced by Margot Phillipson who with the ABC Adelaide production team created and produced The Cook and the Chef.

ABC Books has signed Poh for a two book deal with the first cookbook to be published in late 2010.

Now that Dancing with the Stars has concluded on channel 7, there is a new line up on Sunday nights:

6:30 Sunday Night returns, after nearly 3 months of hiatus.
7:30 Border Security is back
8:00 The Force returns
8:30 Sept 13: Movie: The Bourne Ultimatum.

And a change to Tuesday nights 7.30 hour from Sept 15:

7:30 RSPCA Animal Rescue
8:00 Last Chance Surgery

Want more City Homicide?

There will be additional episodes on Wednesday night September 16 and September 23 at 8.30pm. These are in addition to the Monday night episodes which remain unchanged except for:

The Brownlow Medal 2009 – which will be seen from 7.30pm on Monday September 21 in the AFL states. A yet to be named movie will show in the NRL states. Northern AFL fans can see the Brownlow medal at 11.45pm that night.

And as already mentioned in earlier posts, The Amzaing Race will air double episodes on Sept 17 and 24. Expect a new Thursday night line up from Oct 1. Wonder if they will fast track the new series of the Amazing Race? Possible night for Beauty and the Geek Australia as well.

The last TV Burp will air Thursday Sept 10. Double Take moves to 10.30 Thursdays on the 17th and 24th.

And we are all waiting for the air date of Flash Forward, presumably the show will be fast tracked and possibly air in the last week of September. It premieres in the US on Thursday September 24. An Australian air date of Sunday Sept 27 may be possible. Another option might be Wednesday nights, but Sunday would be more likely to minimise the number of days delay.

Some information here sourced from TV Tonight as well as Media Spy.

Last night on Australian Idol four more contestants were added to the eight who had already made it from the semi final’s rounds the week before last.

Two were chosen by popular vote: Hayley and Toby

And two more were chosen by the judges:  Casey and Tim

So the Australian Idol top 12 is:

Stan Walker
Kate Cook
Ashleigh Toole
Nathan Brake
Sabrina Batshon
Scott Newnham
James Johnston
Kim Cooper
Hayley Warner
Toby Moulton
Casey Barnes
Tim Johnston

Each week, one will be eliminated until the final week late November where the Australian Idol for 2009 will be announced. First top 12 elimination is next Sunday at the start of the show. The remaining 11 will sing again, we get to vote, and then another is eliminated the following week. Note that voting is only open on the night of the show until 3am eastern time that night.

Let us know who you think will be the 2009 Australian Idol by voting in our Throng poll. So far, the results of Throng polls have been the same as the popular vote.

Australian Idol airs on Ten Sundays at 6.30pm and is live in the eastern states.

Ratings for Sunday September 6, 2009

Channel 10 is almost out of the picture completely last night, landing 4th in all time slots from 7.30 to 10pm. Australian Idol is down further but may pick up more audience in following weeks now that Dancing with the Stars has finished. Also, the one day cricket on SBS is attracting some of the usual viewers away with shows like Midsomer Murders being down on last weeks’ high but still was first for its time slot once Dancing finished.

As expected, the night was won by 7. Thankfully, Dancing with the Stars only finished 10 minutes late, which is the normal period of lateness with all commercial networks on Sunday night – as is indicated by the odd times in the time slot order. GO also represents a significant portion of 9′s overall share for the night with Go’s Sunday night line up being the best rating night for the channel.

Ratings for Saturday September 5, 2009

A big night for 10 with the AFL helping the network win the night over the rest. The AFL drew viewers away other shows on at the same time such as the Bill which usually does a lot better than it did last night. The rugby union on 7 typically did not rate well. Competition from the AFL combined with a general lack of following for the game kept the ratings fairly low.

As we move into finals for both NRL and AFL, we will see the channel airing the most popular games winning their respective nights. 10’s AFL will dominate Saturdays while 7’s games on the Friday nights will ensure a win for 7. 9’s NRL on both nights will also do well in the NRL states. The AFL grand final in on channel 10 on Saturday September 26 at 2pm, while the NRL grand final will be seen on 9 on Sunday, October 4 in the evening.

Network Ten are pleased to announce more celebrities confirmed to compete in Celebrity MasterChef.

Veteran Australian actor Steve Bisley, Sydney Swans AFL footballer Ryan O’Keefe, musician Alex Lloyd, Miss Universe contestant Rachael Finch, Aussie lead batsman Simon Katich, Kath & Kim actor comedian Peter Rowsthorn and Network Ten’s Video Hits host Faustina ‘Fuzzy’ Agolley are more celebrities today announced to contend for the Celebrity MasterChef title.

They join already announced celebrities:

Olympic swimmer and world record breaker Eamon Sullivan, leading Australian fashion designer Alex Perry, acclaimed journalist and broadcaster Peter Fitzsimons, The Biggest Loser trainer and fitness expert Michelle Bridges, news anchor, journalist and activist Indira Naidoo, founding member of Australia’s much loved children’s group Hi-5 Kathleen de Leon, and Premier of QLD Anna Bligh.

Filming started on the upcoming series last week in Sydney. In total, there will be 18 celebrity contestants to compete in this series – four yet to be announced.

Celebrity MasterChef is produced by FremantleMedia Australia, and will debut on TEN, Wednesday 30th September at 7:30pm.

Ratings for Friday September 4, 2009.

Football dominates the ratings with AFL in the southern states, NRL in the north. Both helping heir respective networks to good shares of the ratings for the night. Better Homes and Gardens on 7 still gets over a million when shown in only 3 cities. Home and Away was not shown in two cities. Another result of higher football ratings is that George Gently on ABC is down on previous weeks, but still better than 10’s movie.

The 7pm Project fell to another all time low last night, now rating below 600,000. Although 10 have confirmed they will stick with the show for the rest of the year, this should be a worry for the network.

Top show on GO last night was The Nanny, with only 47,000 tuning in.

The night was won by 7, with 9 second but not far behind 7. GO barely would have made any difference last night, with even CSI down at 40,000 viewers.

Network shares:

1 7 29.8%. 2 9 27.5%. 3 10 19.0%. 4 ABC 17.3%. 5 SBS 6.3%

Week so far:

1 7 28.7%. 2 9 27.4%. 3 10 20.6%. 4 ABC 18.0%. 5 SBS 5.2%

If 9 do really well tonight, there is the chance of a win for the week. This weeks’ figure has been helped mostly by their Thursday night, and a higher than usual Wednesday night.
