Ivan Milat: The Backpacker Murders Tuesday, September 25 at 9.30pm on Channel Nine

A bush walker hiking through the Belanglo State Forest, south-west of Sydney stumbled across the remains of a young woman in a shallow grave in September 1992.

Police identified the corpse as that of Joanne Lesley Walters, an English tourist who had gone missing while backpacking along the Hume Highway with her friend, Caroline Clarke.

It was obvious that Joanne had suffered horrific injuries. The body of her friend Caroline, also a British backpacker was discovered the following day. She had been shot more than 10 times through the head.

The grisly discovery of the two bodies would only scratch the surface of a more cruel and sinister plot of death and destruction.

Thirteen months later, the bodies of Victorian couple Deborah Everist and James Gibson were also discovered in Belanglo. One by one, three more victims including German tourists Gabor Neugebauer, Simone Schmidl and Anja Habscied are found. A national manhunt for the killer is launched, and subsequently Ivan Milat – a roadworker living on the south-western outskirts of Sydney is arrested.

In this episode of Crime Investigation Australia, hosted by Steve Liebmann, the last steps of Ivan Milat's known victims are traced in this brilliant, and at times graphic re-enactment of the country's most notorious serial killings.

Milat is currently serving seven life terms for his crimes and he continues to deny his involvement. Police believe that Milat was involved in several other killings and there is strong evidence that he didn't act alone in the Backpacker murders.

Ivan Milat did smoke at one stage when he was in the Hunter Valley prison in the 70's. Maybe he only smoked after or during his killing sprees. He was one sick bastard! I have just finished reading the book "Sins of the Brother" which is a very comprehensive tome of the whole Milat family and the murders.

What I am concerned about is what about the ones he didn't get convicted for i.e., the very suspicious murders near the Jenolan Caves near Sydney when he was working on the road gangs in the area.

I believe there were more people involved i.e., his brothers or some of his sick mates.

lol wtf? bored much?

In one of Milat's statements to please he stated that there were up to seven people involved in the murders. Why have police not prosecuted these other offenders.

BTW plz do not post unless ur going to be helpful

I was just thinking about the cigerette butts that were found at all the crime scenes. Ivan Milat never smoked. I wonder who's DNA it was on them?

Des...

I was watching that program when it was on t.v and said exactly the same thing! The guy walking off the bus that was involved in the police search of the forest really jumped to my attention. It really does look a lot like Bradley John Murdoch. Surley a coincidence but very similar murder cases makes it really weird.

Cheers.

Put it this way. Since Ivan Milat has been arrested there have been no more backpacker murders......

I was actually at the traffic lights in Toronto when Ivan Milat was taken there for his trial. I was very young then, but i remember seeing all the police cars and reporters. Years later i read a book on Ivan Milat and saw one of the trial photographs and noticed that i had been there at the time. I wasnt in the pic of course but it was just as i saw it from the traffic lights.

This program was hard to watch, but watch I did. Psychopaths like Milat have no right to be breathing our air, the quicker this filth completes 'its' threatened hunger strike the better. Rot in hell.

Can I draw your and the police attention to a scene during the show that shows some men getting off a bus during a search for the German backpacker ( Simi), from what I saw one of the men was Bradley John Murdoch, who was charged with the murder of Peter Falconio. can you check this as he may have some connection to these murders ????

It may just be a coincidence, would love to know

Thanks
