Following the success of Compass's three-part dinner series with Australian women, Geraldine Doogue now turns her attention to men to find out what matters to them and what doesn't in the 21st century.
While the first Compass dinner series focused on women from different parts of Australia (Kellyville, Longreach and Melbourne), the men's series focuses on three phases of a man's life - fatherhood, career and retirement.
In the final episode of our men's dinner series, Geraldine invited five men who have moved into a later stage of life. Most are retired or they have stepped back from full time work or their main career.
So what are they doing? Have they become grumpy old men? Or, are they having a ball in this, their second or maybe third life?
At the table are: former Deputy PM Tim Fischer who retired from politics seven years ago and is as busy as ever; John Coombs who bowed out of the union movement after the fight of his life on Australia's waterfront; Bruce Wilson, the Anglican Bishop of Bathurst who shocked his diocese by retiring early; John Wallin, a travelling salesman forced to retire due to ill health; and, Max Walker, former test cricketer-cum-entrepreneur who has no plans to ever retire.
It is a diverse group and not all are necessarily old. Why did they retire when they did? What are they doing now? Are they accepting mortality and 'giving back' or cultivating the soul? What can they tell us? As the elderly become a larger and significantly more influential part of Australia's population, this dinner discussion is resonant and timely.
