The first book being debated is Devil May Care which continues the story of the most iconic spy in literature. It was published to celebrate the centenary of creator Ian Fleming's birth. The much anticipated book was released simultaneously across the globe on 28th May 2008, becoming an instant best-seller.

The second book on this month's list was first published in 1953 and written by acclaimed Canadian-born writer Saul Bellow, The Adventures of Augie March centres on a penniless Chicago boy growing up in the Great Depression.

Jennifer Byrne returns to the book club with regulars Marieke Hardy (now co-hosting Triple J's national breakfast program) and Jason Steger (book editor of The Age). Joining the discussions are comedian and actor Judith Lucy (making her second visit) and barrister and human rights advocate Julian Burnside QC.

The books for discussion are Christopher Koch's The Memory Room and Naked by David Sedaris.

Christopher Koch is the author of The Year Of Living Dangerously, which won The Age Book of the Year Award and was made into a film by Peter Weir in 1983. He has twice won the Miles Franklin Award for Fiction, for The Doubleman (1985) and Highways To A War (1996).

FIRST TUESDAY BOOK CLUB: SUMMER SPECIAL

The First Tuesday Book Club Summer Special is a one-hour treat for book lovers, giving viewers all the best summer reading ideas. Joining host Jennifer Byrne and regular book clubbers Marieke Hardy and Jason Steger is Scottish master of crime Ian Rankin, and Australia's favourite gardener, Peter Cundall.

Our book clubbers will reveal their best reads of 2007, and we will also feature a kids’ book club to find out what young readers have been getting their teeth into lately. Two brand new books will also be discussed; Ruth Rendell's Not in the Flesh, and Australian author Charlotte Wood's new novel, The Children.
