Foxtel and Austar Working on Becoming Greener.

Foxtel and Austar has signed an agreement with the Australian Government to reduce carbon emissions by improving set top box energy efficiency.

Foxtel and Austar have worked with the Government to agree on energy targets, which are outlined in a technical schedule for set top boxes.

While the energy consumption of set top boxes is well below other household appliances such as fridges, washing machines and clothes dryers, Foxtel and Austar believe that it is possible to improve the energy efficiency of their set top boxes.

The subscription television sector is driven by its 8 million viewers and is taking this action as consumers increasingly expect that companies will take responsible and economically sustainable action to reduce their environmental impact.

Major television manufacturers are also taking on the challenge to produce more eco friendly large TVs as more and more regions across the world set targets for consumer electronics to use less energy. In particular, California is set to restrict the maximum size of plasma and LCD televisions able to be sold there in an attempt to reduce energy consumption. Large flat screen TVs use up to ten times the power of traditional smaller television sets.
