FOYLE'S WAR: THE FUNK HOLE
Repeat Series & Final
Friday, 11 January 2008
As World War Two rages over Europe, Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle (Michael Kitchen) fights his own battle against murder, mystery and betrayal on the south coast of England.
Although the beautiful countryside seems far away from the glory of the front, Foyle's battle is an ordinary struggle against everyday evil - in extraordinarily dangerous times.
It is April 1941. The body of a young man is found half-buried in the woods. When Foyle's investigation into the death leads him to a 'Funk Hole' hotel (a hotel that caters for long term guests in war-time, cowards who are essentially hiding from the war) he discovers there are a number of guests from London, quietly sitting out the war. Included among them is London councillor Frank Vaudrey (Richard Hope).
As Foyle makes progress on the investigation, he is suddenly taken off the case and placed under house arrest, accused of sedition. Detective Inspector Collier (Nicholas Farrell) - a 'by the book' policeman based in London - replaces him. At once, Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) and Milner's (Anthony Howell) loyalties are torn. Collier takes a liking to Milner but Milner conflicts with him, and places his own career in jeopardy by secretly reporting the progress of the case back to Foyle.
Foyle's situation is not helped by the fact that Andrew (Julian Ovenden) is at home convalescing after having been shot down and left with a broken foot. Then Frank Vaudrey, the councillor staying at the hotel is murdered.
The investigation which follows reveals that Collier has followed Vaudrey to Hastings and suggests that Collier may have framed Foyle in order to take his place in the investigation.
