Andrew Denton slams "narrow-thinking" in Aussie TV

September 9th, 2010

Enough Rope host Andrew Denton has come out swinging against the Logies saying the awards show is doing a poor job of recognising emerging talent.

During a recent interview, Denton launched an attack against the likes of Australian TV heavyweights Bert Newton and Graham Kennedy saying he is “sick to f***ing death” of hearing about them.

"I don't think anyone ever sets out to make bad television but I think a lot of bad television is stuff that's done in the rear-vision mirror of what works somewhere else. To me, the Logies is a microcosm of it," Denton said.

"With due respect to the late and the living Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton, I'm sick to f***ing death of hearing them eulogised [at] every Logies."

Newton and Kennedy have 10 Gold Logies between them, collected over careers which have spanned more than six decades.

Denton believes that the Logies exemplifies the “narrow-thinking in Australian television”.

Comedian sacked over Logies night tweets

May 5th, 2010

Comedian Catherine Deveny has been fired from her writing gig at The Age following the public backlash from her inappropriate Logies night tweets.

The Melbourne paper has dismissed Deveny after she posted several questionable comments about Rove McManus and Bindi Irwin on her Twitter account during last weekend’s 2010 TV Week Logie Awards.

In her comments she said she hoped 11-year-old Irwin “gets laid” during the night and that Rove McManus’s new wife Tasma “doesn’t die too”, a reference to the death of his former wife Belinda Emmett to cancer in 2006.

The Age’s editor-in-chief Paul Ramadge has said that Deveny is no longer required to write columns for the paper.

"I came to the view that I didn't think Catherine was a good fit for The Age going forward,” Mr Ramadge told a radio station.

"The way she was positioning herself (in social media) was not in keeping with paper's standards."

The Logies Should be Live

May 4th, 2010

Once again, some Logies results were leaked on Twitter prior to the event going to air on Nine. The Logies on Nine are actually broadcast with a delay of about 40 minutes which means twitter-happy guests are able to get results out before it is seen on Nine. The delay is even bigger in states not on Eastern time.

The twitter effect has prompted calls for the Logies to be broadcast live, but Nine have been quotes saying they remain firm on the delay and have no plans at this stage to broadcast the event live. Guests at the Logies were asked not to leak information out but that didn’t stop the hundreds of tweets that went out not only about the winners but commenting - usually not favourably - on the state of certain guests.

David Mott Most Thanked TV Executive

May 3rd, 2010

If there was a Logie for the most thanked TV executive, it would have to go to Ten’s chief programmer, David Mott.

Just about every acceptance speech made by a Ten personality or winner made mention of David Mott - who truly has to be seen as the driving force behind Ten at the moment.

David Mott, unlike commercial rivals Seven and Nine, understands the philosophy of letting shows build audience and growing brands over time as opposed to the concept of instant or overnight ratings success. Mott has persisted with the 7PM Project despite the show being written off by many as unwatchable. Seven and Nine tend to react quickly to ratings, rescheduling or axing shows that do not rate well (actually - Ten does as well but not to the degree of the other two. Supernatural and Stargate Universe are two classic examples).

Gibney and Meagher favourites for Gold Logie

April 28th, 2010

The fight for the Gold Logie is getting interesting with a surge of support coming for Home and Away stalwart Ray Meagher.

Packed To The Rafters star Rebecca Gibney is still the favourite to claim back to back Logies but the sentimental favourite appears to be the Bay’s Alf Stewart.

Gibney’s odds at Sportingbet have lengthened to $1.60 while Meagher has closed to $3 to take the coveted award at the ceremony this weekend.

Entertainer Rove McManus is at $8.50, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation host Shaun Micallef follows at $11, with Adam Hills of Spicks and Specks at $14. Outsiders are Wil Anderson, Esther Anderson, and Paul McDermott.

"It looks to be a two-horse race, with Rebecca the firm favourite, but there is a lot of momentum for Ray," Sportingbet Australia betting manager Bill Richmond said.

The 2010 TV Week Logie Awards will screen on Channel Nine on Sunday May 2.

Celebrated news reader to receive posthumous Gold Logie

April 19th, 2010

Brian Naylor, celebrated news reader and TV host, will be posthumously inducted into TV’s Hall of Fame at the 2010 Logies.

Naylor and his wife Moiree died in 2009 during the Black Saturday bush fires on their Kinglake West property, northeast of Melbourne.

The 78-year-old was a stable feature of the Nine and Seven news networks over a career that spanned 40 years, including a stint on Nine News in Melbourne that lasted two decades.

At the 2010 awards, hosted by Bert Newton, Naylor will posthumously receive the Gold Logie thus becoming a member of the Hall of Fame.

"Brian was a terrific bloke. Immediately you met him, you liked him," Bert Newton says of the late TV icon.

"I'm just sad it's a posthumous one, but I know he'd be thrilled. He came through as one of the greats."

The 2010 Logie Awards will screen on Nine on May 2.

Foxtel execs may forgo Logies in protest

April 19th, 2010

Furious Foxtel executives may refuse to attend the 2010 Logies in protest to the Freeview sponsorship of the event.

The pay-TV network is unhappy that the Freeview platform, which covers networks ABC, SBS, TEN, Seven, Nine, Prime, Southern Cross and WIN, has claimed sponsorship rights to the event and many of the network’s execs may not attend at all.

Brian Walsh, Foxtel’s Director of Television, wrote to Logie’s organisers voicing his disapproval.

“It should really be a celebration of the best in television — irrespective of whether it’s commercial, public broadcasting or subscription — and I think by Freeview taking out a sponsorship it’s sending out a message that the subscription industry is not welcome. I don’t want to suggest they shouldn’t present their position — it’s their job — but to take out a sponsorship on an industry `night of nights’ is very pointed and, looking overall, I don’t think it’s in the spirit of the night.”

SuBo No Go For Hey Hey and Logies

April 17th, 2010

Susan Boyle has cancelled her up and coming visit to Australia which was to include appearances at the Logie Awards and on Hey Hey It’s Saturday on Nine.

SuBo’s representatives have decided that she needs to rest after promotional tours of American and Japan before heading back to the studio to work on the follow up to her debut album “I Dreamed a Dream”.

"Regrettably, we have had to make the tough decision to postpone our Australian visit for the Logies in May,'' her manager Andy Stephens said.

"We want to apologise to all Susan's Australian fans and look forward to coming to Australia later in the year.''

Boyle’s management hope to get another album ready for release in November, in time for Christmas sales. Sony are now trying to book Susan Boyle for a November Australian visit to coincide with the second album release.
