This week on MEDICAL EMERGENCY, a single mum’s life hangs in the balance after a high speed head-on accident, a little boy’s day at his grand mothers ends in hospital and a skateboarder is confused and disorientated after a fall.
At the scene of a head-on collision, local fire crews work to free a woman with suspected head and spinal injuries. 33-year old Tamara is still unconscious and desperately needs paramedic’s help. They don’t know it yet but with the severity of Tamara’s injuries, she will almost need a miracle to survive.
Two-year-old Roman has been brought in with burns after pulling a saucepan of boiling water off his grandmother’s stove. The trauma staff’s first priority is to provide pain relief. In the rush to get Roman to hospital, there is no time to tell his mother about the accident. If his burns are worse than first thought, Roman may need skin grafts to help his recovery.
A 23-year-old skateboarder has been brought in by friends after landing on his head. The accident happened four hours ago but it wasn’t until Manu started to vomit and became confused that he was brought in to hospital. With no obvious signs of trauma, his confusion and stress make it difficult for trauma staff to diagnose him. He needs to be taken for scans to see if he has bleeding or bruising on his brain. If his brain is injured, there is a good chance he will get worse before he gets better.
At The Alfred, a 23-year-old leopard has been brought in by her friends – the clown and beared lady – after taking a tumble at a dress up party. Hanna requires x-rays to confirm if her arm is broken and to assist doctors to decide the best way to manage it.
