Simon Fletcher (Julian Wadham) a successful theatrical director arrives in the village of Badger's Drift, his head filled with disturbing childhood memories. When Richard Bayly (Dominic Jephcott), a local property developer, is diagnosed with a brain tumour he feels the need to confess his sins to Reverend Stephen Wentworth (Richard Briers) before he dies. Later that night Richard is violently murdered in his own home with the vicar's Indian sword.
DCI Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) can't understand who would want to kill a dying man. However he soon learns that Richard's redevelopment plans for the village were not seen as beneficial to everyone. When another murder is committed, Barnaby and DS Gavin Troy (Daniel Casey) face a race against time to unearth the truth surrounding tragic events from the past and to discover the perpetrator.
