A dead body is discovered on a building site, but is the person a victim of an accident or a killer? Ducky and his assistant Jimmy Palmer investigate the body, on site, in order to determine the sequence of events leading to their death. However, when Palmer comes face-to-face with the suspected killer, he realises he may be the next target.

The dead body is identified as a man called Baxter – but investigations into his personal life reveal that he has no bank accounts, no tax records and no permanent residence. How could a man exist with so little link to reality?

Palmer, meanwhile, has very little recollection of the killer, despite intensive interrogation, so Abby and McGee are forced to use alternative methods to try and jog his memory. He may just reveal a little more than he intends to when Abby puts him in under hypnosis.

Interrogations with former colleagues of Jordan reveal that she had a fear of rest rooms, confirming to Gibbs that this was indeed a malicious murder.

More concerning is that Jordan appears to have had a stalker, a man who has recently been released from prison. Although he protests to have loved Jordan, could he have murdered her in a fit of jealousy?

Ducky's revelation that Jordan was pregnant causes the team to consider that Jordan was perhaps having an affair, much closer to home – but could it have been with the stalker?

When his body is returned to Washington, his wife reveals that her husband had been in the middle of a business transaction with unscrupulous investors at the time of his death.

Because of that, she doesn’t believe that he was actually killed by the mortar attack, which is also confirmed by Ducky's autopsy, revealing that a gun shot wound was the cause of death. She thinks he was singled out: murdered by a contract killer.

Gibbs dispatches DiNozzo and the inexperienced but competent NCIS analyst Nikki Jardine to Iraq to continue the investigation, while Gibbs and the rest of the NCIS team follow leads and investigate the crime from Washington.
