When Petty Officer Jessica Smith is allegedly assaulted in her own home, she is adamant the intruder was part of the military and had planned to kill her. The problem is, Jessica has a history of psychological trauma so Gibbs and his team are unsure of whether she is telling the truth about her supposed attack.

P.O. Smith is institutionalised after the incident at a military hospital, but the one place that is meant to protect her ultimately destroys her.

After calling Gibbs with a desperate plea to come and save her, P.O. Smith is found hanging in her hospital room. Gibbs is immediately dubious that her death was a suicide and Ducky supports his theory when he discovers that P.O. Smith was indeed murdered.

Meanwhile, Agent DiNozzo has some incriminating information about Agent Todd which he threatens to release to the department. What he doesn't count on is Agent Todd having some of her own material on DiNozzo that he would be very embarrassed about… FBI Agent Fornell approaches Gibbs about P.O. Smith's case – it appears the FBI have their own interests in Smith.

Through both their investigations, Gibbs and Fornell discover Smith was hiding something that could unlock the mystery behind her alleged attack and her fate.
