THE DAGG SEA SCROLLS

Sunday, 30 December 2007

John Clarke is a satirist, actor, writer and director, whom Australians have taken to heart since he arrived in 1977 from New Zealand. But where did John come from and why is he held in such high esteem across the Tasman? This wonderful retrospective charts the life of John Clarke and his alter ego, Fred Dagg. It screens 7.30pm on Sunday, December 30 on ABC TV.

Whether it be his weekly appearances with Bryan Dawe on The 7.30 Report, the acclaimed series The Games and The Gillies Report, the adaptations of the Shane Maloney novels Stiff and The Brush Off or
his numerous books and writings, John Clarke has kept Australia laughing for almost 30 years. But how did this comic master learn his trade?

When the singlet-wearing, gum-booted farmer Fred Dagg made his first appearance on New Zealand television in 1973, no-one quite knew what to make of him. But they soon fell in love with Fred and his
unique take on life - so much so that he went on to become a national icon.

Much more than just a collection of memorable television moments, The Dagg Sea Scrolls reveals the making of John Clarke's comic brilliance as he improvised, explored and ultimately created his unique
brand of satire that has entertained millions in both New Zealand and Australia.
