BBC Worldwide, the BBC’s commercial arm, has announced that the global BBC iPlayer App will be available on iPhone and iPod Touch[1] from 8th December, exclusively from the App Store www.bbc.com/iplayer/tv.

Previously exclusive to iPad, this unique Video on Demand pilot subscription service will now offer many more viewers in Australia – as well as Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland – the opportunity to delve into an extensive archive of award-winning classic and contemporary British TV programming both at home and on the move. Those who already have a BBC iPlayer subscription on their iPad can use the same subscription to access the content via iPhone or iPod Touch at no extra charge[2].

John Smith, Chief Executive of BBC Worldwide commented: “The global BBC iPlayer has seen great growth since the pilot first launched in Europe in July – both in terms of geographical expansion and technological developments.  Moving to iPhone and iPod Touch allows us to take the service to a significant new potential audience and deliver fantastic programme content from the BBC and the UK’s creative industry.”

“The extension of the BBC Global iPlayer App onto iPhone and iPod Touch is a significant development in our strategy as it will open up the opportunity for a whole new audience to enjoy the best moments from seventy years of brilliant BBC programmes, wherever and whenever they want,” added Jana Bennett, BBC Worldwide President of Worldwide Networks and Global iPlayer.

“The App is perfect for modern audiences who have incredibly fast paced lifestyles and want to watch their favourite shows when and where they choose, which is increasingly whilst they are on the move. Taking the App to iPhone and iPod Touch was a natural progression following the launch on iPad earlier this year and brings an even greater level of portability and convenience to the service.”

SPOILER ALERT!

Robin from How I Met Your Mother – Is definitely not the mother!

It has been revealed by the producers that Robin actually never goes on to be a mum. The confirmation actually came four years ago, according to exec producer Carter Bays. “I would point people to the episode from Season 3 [titled] ‘Little Boys,’ he says. “In that episode, Robin’s grappling with the fact that she doesn’t particularly like children. And it ends with [Future Ted] explaining that she did go on to eventually like children in the form of Ted’s kids.”

In case there remains any doubt, Bays states for the record that Robin “doesn’t become a mum.” Does that mean she ends up with Barney? Let’s wait and see!

How I Met Your Mother will return in 2012 on Channel Seven.

Some of the biggest names in world golf will compete in the 2011 JBWere Masters to be broadcast by Nine’s Wide World of Sports from Victoria Golf Club on December 17 and 18.

World No.1 Luke Donald, playing in Australia for the first time, will tee off against an impressive lineup of golfers including fellow Englishman and World No.14 Ian Poulter, who is also making his first appearance at the JBWere Masters. The other International on course will be Italian young gun Matteo Manassero, who at 18 is the youngest player to win a European Tour event.

Australian Open and PGA champion Greg Chalmers will be hoping to make history by becoming only the second person in Australian golf to win a Triple Crown. Robert Allenby, the other golfer to achieve that feat, won all three major Australian tournaments in 2005 and this year will be aiming for his third Masters title.

The strong Australian challenge will also feature Geoff Ogilvy, John Senden, Jarrod Lyle and Brendan Jones.

Stuart Appleby will be defending his title, having won his first gold jacket at last year’s event, alongside former Masters champions Richard Green, Michael Campbell, Rod Pampling, Craig Parry, Brad Hughes, Peter Lonard and Peter Senior.

Channel Nine’s coverage will be hosted by Eddie McGuire and Mark Nicholas, with expert commentary from Ian Baker-Finch, Jack Newton and Wayne Grady.

Nine’s broadcast of the JBWere Masters begins at 12.30pm on Saturday, December 17.

SPOILER ALERT!

It’s official: Misha Collins is set return to The CW’s Supernatural later this season, according to TV line.

Specifically, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. TV says that Collins will appear as a guest star in Episode 17 as well as in “at least two additional episodes” beyond that — though not necessarily as fallen angel Castiel.

“It has always been our intention to bring back Misha in some form,” executive producer Sera Gamble hedged shortly after Castiel famously exited the canvas earlier this season. “We certainly can’t say too much about where the story is going to go, but we love Misha and want to continue to work with him.”

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy today visited Rockhampton to celebrate the Digital Switchover across the regional Queensland switchover region.

“This is a great day for households across regional Queensland which will now enjoy the full suite of digital TV channels thanks to the Gillard Government’s Digital Switchover program,” Senator Conroy said.

“Today we switch off analog and switch over to our digital future in regional Queensland.

“It is a future in which television choice is increased for all Australians, as we harness new developments in technology and make better use of our broadcast space.

“I thank the people of regional Queensland who have looked to this future and worked so enthusiastically with us to make it happen.”

At 9:00am today, analog signals across the regional Queensland switchover region were switched off permanently.

Many households in regional Queensland did not have adequate reception of terrestrial digital TV services before switchover.

The Regional Queensland switchover means more than one million households are now converted to digital TV nationally. This marks a significant milestone in Australia’s transition to an era of digital only television.

New investment by the Government and broadcasters means households across Regional Queensland are enjoying the full suite of digital TV channels for the very first time.

“Regional Queensland is the fourth and largest region to switch to digital only TV,” Senator Conroy said.

“The Gillard Government’s investment in equalising TV services for regional and rural Australia includes the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service, which is available for those that cannot receive adequate terrestrial reception.”

The VAST service includes all 16 free-to-air digital channels plus a dedicated regional news channel.

Residents in regional Queensland who have switched to digital TV will have more choice – with 16 TV Channels now available – including ABC1, ABC2, ABC3, ABC24, SBS1, SBS2, SBSHD, ONE, Eleven, Go!, Gem, 7Two, 7mate, WIN, Channel Seven and Southern Cross Ten. Digital TV also provides improved picture and sound quality.

The switch to digital only TV in parts of regional Queensland means that many towns will finally have the same number of channels as is available in city centres.

Support is still available for people who haven’t switched to digital TV or are having reception issues. Visit www.digitalready.gov.au or call 1800 20 10 13 for more information.

The Annual TV Week Logie Award nomiations have been published by the magazine – but are they kidding?

Each category has so many nominees that is makes it hard for the viewer to decide. Shouldn’t a TV week or a Logie commitee lower it down to at least 10 so we can choose easier.

We know that the top few will be chosen in the running for the awards, but really the lists are endless. If your favourite isn’t there – you can’t even vote for them.

Anyway here are Throng’s picks in each category – love it or hate it. It will be followed by some of TV weeks listed nominees, that can be viewed at www.tvweek.com.au
