RATES DECISION A CLOSE CALL

Exclusive SKY NEWS BUSINESS CHANNEL poll tips an interest rate cut tomorrow

SKY NEWS BUSINESS Channel today revealed the results of an exclusive poll of 23 leading economists.

12 believe the Reserve Bank will cut the official cash rate at its monthly board meeting tomorrow, bringing it to 4.25%. If the Board makes the move it will be the second cut in a row and the first time we’ve seen consecutive cuts since the depths of the global financial crisis.

All economists agree the European debt crisis is the key concern for the RBA, but say that needs to be balanced with the relative strength of the Australian economy. It is part of the RBA charter to keep inflation in check.

Economists also expect monetary policy will continue to ease during 2012.

SKY NEWS BUSINESS, as part of its comprehensive coverage of the rates announcement on Tuesday, will host an exclusive RATES REACTION Panel of experts, including economists and mortgage providers, to discuss the SKY NEWS BUSINESS poll, the rates decision and what it all means for your hip pocket.

Hosted by Carson Scott, the RATES REACTION Panel will be broadcast LIVE from the Reserve Bank of Australia at 2:30pm AEDT on Tuesday, December 6 on SKY NEWS BUSINESS.

I Survived… Stories of Australians – Premieres Wednesday, January 11 at 8.30pm

In the face of death what would you do to survive? What gives someone the strength? Is it courage, adrenalin, inner strength or just plain luck?

These are just some of the questions answered in the new documentary series I Survived… Stories of Australians that will premiere on Wednesday, January 11 at 8.30pm exclusively on Bio.

Imagine being swallowed head first by a five-metre great white shark or being trapped in the jaws of a giant saltwater crocodile for half-an-hour. Across eight episodes, I Survived… will delve into the ‘sliding door’ moments where twists and turns of fate have put people in the wrong place at the wrong time – where, against all odds, they cheated death and lived to tell the tale.

Each one-hour episode will feature three inspirational survival stories from natural disasters to man-made acts of terror and depravity. I Survived… follows the stories of ordinary Australians doing extraordinary things.

In episode one we hear from Tammy Potter who survived a horrifying ordeal when a masked intruder sexually assaulted, abducted and robbed her at knifepoint; Veteran sailors John Stanley and John Gibson who survived a terrifying 29 hours clinging to their shredded life raft in the doomed 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race; and, marking the one year anniversary of the devastating Queensland floods, Edward Spark recounts his miraculous survival against the odds in a national tragedy which claimed the lives of over 35 people.

I Survived… also features stories from Bali bombing survivor Nicole McLean who bravely overcame her horrific injuries following the Paddy’s Bar explosion; Ex-RAAF engineer Peter Crosswell who feigned death and survived Australia’s deadliest shooting massacre at the Broad Arrow Café in Port Arthur; Dianne and Les Boardman who were walking along Phuket’s Patong beach and were swept away when the 2004 tsunami hit and John Tulloch whose bloodied face made headlines after he unknowingly sat three feet away from a suicide bomber in the London terror attacks.

I Survived… Stories of Australians is produced by Graham McNeice Productions, the creators of the hit CI Network series Crime Investigation Australia, exclusively for Bio.

ABC Director of News, Kate Torney, announced last week some changes to key hosting roles for 2012.

Ali Moore presented her last Lateline program last week, as she is moving overseas next year with her family.

Ali has more than 20 years experience in journalism and began her career with the ABC in 1987.

Since 2006, when Ali returned to the ABC to launch and host Lateline Business, she has also presented on Business Today on Australia Network, hosted the Morning Show on 774 ABC Local Radio in Melbourne for six months, anchored the Afternoon Live program when ABC News 24 launched, and for the last year has been sharing the hosting duties on Lateline on Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights.  Earlier in her career, Ali was the ABC’s China Correspondent from 1992 to 1995.

Director of ABC News, Kate Torney, said: “Ali is an excellent journalist and presenter, and has been a key part of the ABC News team. She has demonstrated her ability to adapt to different formats, programs and platforms over the last few years and she’ll be greatly missed by colleagues at ABC News. We thank her for her contribution and wish Ali and her family the very best as they head off to Singapore”.

Tonight is the last Lateline for 2011 and the program will resume on January 30, 2012, with Emma Alberici joining Tony Jones as a program host.  Currently Europe Correspondent for the ABC, Emma will be returning to Australia after more than three years based in London.

Emma Alberici joined the ABC in 2002 as presenter of its new morning business television news program, Business Breakfast. Also during her time at the ABC Emma has presented the Midday news and The 7.30 Report, and reported and presented for ABC Radio Current Affairs programs and Lateline Business.

Karina Carvalho will be joining Michael Rowland on ABC News Breakfast in 2012 while Virginia Trioli is on maternity leave.  Karina is currently Western Australia’s 7pm News presenter and will be taking up the breakfast chair in Melbourne from February. Karina has been presenting the 7pm News in Perth since May 2008. A replacement for Karina is yet to be announced.

Karina joins the breakfast team at an exciting time, with Weekend Breakfast hosted by Andrew Geoghegan and Miriam Corowa also launching in February.

Director of ABC News, Kate Torney, also confirmed that Chris Uhlmann will solo host 7.30 next year, while Leigh Sales is on maternity leave and Heather Ewart will step back into the role of Political Editor.

For its 29th year, the much loved Christmas event Woolworths Carols in the Domain will be hosted by Grant Denyer and Natalie Barr.

The Carols will be shown live from Sydney’s Domain on Saturday, December 17, at 8.30 pm.

Joining in on the Christmas spirit on the Carols stage include Seven stars Georgie Parker, Hugh Sheridan, Damien Leith, The X Factor winner Reece Mastin, plus The Wiggles, Paulini, Tania Doko, David Campbell and Melinda Schneider. More performers will be announced over the coming weeks.

Grant says of being on the Carols stage: “Nothing is more magical than the spirit of Christmas and being part of a show that has 29 years of tradition is such a fantastic experience. I have always said that the Carols experience even softens the hardest of men.”

Hosting the event for the first time, Natalie adds: “I am over the moon to be cohosting the Carols this year. I’ve always loved the Carols. Twenty years ago, when I first moved to Sydney, I’d go with girlfriends and we’d sit up the back with some food and a nice bottle of chardonnay, enjoying the amazing music and spectacular sea of lights. For the last 10 years, I’ve gone with my husband and two boys. For me, Christmas begins with the Carols. It’s a magical event.”

Woolworths Carols in the Domain brings Australians together to celebrate the songs and spirit of Christmas. The Salvation Army OASIS Youth Support Network is once again the event’s official charity. OASIS  will receive all the funds from the sale of official candle bags at the event.

Woolworths Carols in the Domain is proudly presented by Telstra.
