Nicole Cornes’ lawyer Stuart Littlemore has asked a court whether Mick Molloy is actually a funny comedian as the defamation trial continues in Adelaide.

Molloy and Channel Ten are accused of defamation by Nicole Cornes who was the subject of a derogatory remark by Molloy on an episode of Before the Game.

Manager of the show’s production company Roving Enterprises, Kevin Whyte, told the court the South Australian Supreme Court that the comment was intended to be comedic.

“The nature of the way the piece evolved on air, it is clear on its face a bit of comedy that was set up [but] went off the rails and evolved in this piece of banter,” he said.

“He [Molloy] is given free range to be a comedian and make people laugh.”

However, Cornes’ lawyer Littlemore questioned Whyte over Molloy’s comedic talent.

“He tries to be funny, but it doesn’t always work, does it?” Littlemore asked him.

“That can be said of many comedians,” Whyte responded.

“Where would you draw the line?” Littlemore asked. “What about the sexual ridicule of a married woman? Would you draw the line there? Do you respect women? Do you respect marriage? Do you respect fidelity? Are they all things to be traduced by ridicule?”

“No, they are not,” Whyte answered.

The case continues today.

The first season of Underbelly may well screen unedited in Victoria following the Supreme Court’s lifting of a blackout on the reporting of drug kingpin Tony Mokbel’s criminal history.

Underbelly was banned from screening in the state in 2008 but now looks set to be screened unedited by Channel 9.

Robert Mammone, who played Mokbel in the series, says Screentime plans to expand the Mokbel story.

“Our information that we were working on, as it is been shown four years later, is Tony’s involvement was huge and we couldn’t tell that story,” Mammone said.

“They found Tony in Greece only days before I was due to fly to Melbourne to start filming, which threw a huge spanner in the works.

“I understood him to be flamboyant but loyal to his family and inner circle.”

“With the suppression orders lifted and Tony admitting to some of the charges, the chain of events, the truth of that can be revealed.

“Whether we need to revisit people being murdered, well I’m not sure if that is necessary.”

A Channel 9 source said the network was looking “seriously” at screening the series.

All times AEST

Natalie Barr got a little tongue-tied this morning on Sunrise while presenting a story on a life-size Barbie doll.

Barr referred to the doll as a life-size “virgin” as opposed to “version”, which of course fellow presenters Kochie, Mel and Simon found hilarious.
