What happened to the double episode of Winners & Losers last night?

With a finishing time of 10.10, after starting around 8.40, it was more like a 90 minute episode as opposed to a full double episode. Guides had indicated a 10.30 finish.

Perhaps Seven had thought twice about having their newest drama run past 10.30pm – after 10pm, the drop off of people watching free to air TV can be quite substantial.

In ratings, the first episode was watched by 1,566,000 while the second 1,420,000. Assuming the second episode is the half hour part from 9.30, that is a drop off of audience of around 10%, although maintaining an audience that high that late rarely happens.

Had the show have gone past 10.30pm – which it would have if it was a full double episode, the drop off would have been higher, thereby affecting the number that would return for episode 4 next Tuesday.

It appears likely that the two episodes were edited down to make a shorter double to avoid finishing too late. In watching the show last night, it was difficult to tell exactly where one episode finished and the next start.

Seven ended up airing two episodes of Cougar Town after 10.10.

Tuesday March 29, 2011

Huge result for Winners & Losers with most of last week’s 1.6 million returning for this week’s offering – which wasn’t really a double episode – more like a 90 minute episode as it finished at 10.08pm. Probably best that it didn’t go until 10.30 as the potential drop off could have been larger.

Among the new series are “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” an animated adventure combining new and classic Disney characters Captain Hook and Smee (“Peter Pan”); a series of Disney Poetry Shorts which showcases poems for children set against classic Disney animation; and two short form series, “Mickey Mousekersize” and “Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps,” to encourage healthy lifestyles for preschoolers and families.  Playhouse Disney hits “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”, “Handy Manny”, “Jungle Junction”, “Special Agent Oso”, “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!” and “Imagination Movers”, among others, will be part of Disney Junior.

Pyne said: “We’re very excited to bring Disney Junior to New Zealand and Australia, two countries that have always embraced the heritage of Disney characters and storytelling.  Disney Junior in a unique offering in the marketplace as it takes these classic Disney characters and brings them to life on TV on beyond, while encouraging early childhood learning and embracing the magic of emotionally connected storytelling.”

Premiering in conjunction with Disney Junior is the new animated series, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” an interactive treasure hunt that follows the adventures of classic characters Captain Hook and Smee, along with a new crew of kid pirates led by the enthusiastic and courageous Jake. The series, which emphasizes teamwork and features original pirate rock music performed by The Never Land Pirate Band.

Also debuting with the launch of Disney Junior is a series of Disney Poetry Shorts, designed to bring fond memories of Disney classics to parents and create new ones for kids. The series of short-form animation showcases poems for children set to scenes and imagery from classic Disney films. It will introduce preschoolers to the beauty of a poem well read and combine it with extraordinary moments in Disney animation history.

The New Zealand and Australia roll-out follows the brand launch in Latin America and the UK earlier this month. The US premiere of Disney Junior last February on Disney Channel was Disney Channel’s best month ever among Kids 2-5. Year to year, the Disney Junior block is up a whopping 44% among Kids, 55% among Boys 2-5, 32% among Girls 2-5 and 13% among Women 18-49.   To date in 2011, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” is TV’s #1 series among Kids and Boy 2-5.

Programming Amendments Update March 29.

1. ACA Sunday.

Nine have confirmed that ACA Sunday will remain in the schedule for the next two Sundays April 3 and April 10. The previous three editions of ACA Sunday have been such last minute changes, that EPGs and even the next morning’s ratings did not reflect that the show was on.

ACA Sunday will be hosted by Karl Stefanovic, who, according to the Sunday Telegraph will remain host until a regular host can be found. Tracy Grimshaw, who hosts the weekday editions ACA, and hosted the first surprise ACA Sunday earlier in March, is not interested in the extra work, while Karl only plans to stay there until a permanent host is found.

Nine, however, have not committed to ACA Sunday for the long term and are watching how it goes. So far figures have been mixed, with the highest numbers reached – of around 1.2 million – for the school bully interview two Sundays ago.

Customs now will now air 7pm on Sunday April 3 and 10, and Send in the Dogs Australia is out of the schedule on those tow nights.

2. 7TWO Fridays 7.30pm.

As of this Friday, April 1, 7TWO will now be playing two episodes of Are You Being Served from 7.30pm. That’s My Boy, which was about to move into its second season, is now out of the schedule.

Are You Being Served also airs at 7.10pm Sundays and 8.10pm Tuesdays on 7TWO.

3. Dexter on ELEVEN

The season finale of Dexter airs at 9.30pm Monday April 4 on ELEVEN. From Monday April 11, 9.30pm, Dexter moves in to repeats – starting from the first episode, the Pilot.

Programming Amendments Update March 28*.

1. No more Heroes for Seven.

Heroes (season 4) that was to air at midnight Thursday nights on Seven will no longer air. Instead, True Beauty is on Seven at midnight Thursdays from this Thursday March 31.

As a result, True Beauty will no longer be seen on Sunday mornings, replaced by Minute to Win It on Sunday April 3 and a movie the following Sunday.

Note the Sunday change is for the Sydney and Brisbane markets only.

2. Amazing Race break on 7mate

Due to a one week break in the US, The Amazing Race will not be seen on 7mat eon Sunday April 10. That night, from 6.30, 7mate will be airing the movie Galaxy Quest. That will also mean that Gene Simmons Family Jewels will take a break for the week as well. Not a bad idea, seeing many states have school holidays then.

3. ICC World Cup 1st Semi Final

Nine will air the first semi final between Sri Lanka and New Zealand from 11.55pm Tue March 29.

* Everyday, there are a number of programming amendments mostly from the Nine network, but also Seven and Ten. The plan is to list the prime time changes in particular on the one daily post rather than just posting stories based around major changes – which has meant many of the smaller changes get left out. Note that changes to GO programming will be shown on the TV Guide for GO only. For the latest GO programming, click here to go to the TV Guide for GO.

Sony Music and Network Ten proudly present ‘Music From The Circle’, a collection of 38 classic hits chosen by “The Girls” from the hit TEN show, “The Circle”. In addition to smash hit songs by artists including Michael Jackson, Prince, Olivia Newton-John and Duran Duran, the album contains a new song entitled “Circle Song”, co-written by Clare Bowditch & Yumi Stynes and performed by Chrissie, Yumi, Denise & Gorgi.

The decision to make a compilation album was simple given the girls love of music and the important part it plays in the show. They host regular music artists for interviews and performances and their ‘Music Appreciation Day’ segment has become a popular part of the show. This segment sees the Girls counting down their top songs relating to topics ranging from the ‘Best Power Ballads’ to ‘Boy Bands’ to ‘TV Theme Songs’. It has become a viewer favourite with the phones and their facebook page running hot with song suggestions from fans of the show.

The Girls wanted to use the opportunity of making an album to highlight a charity they feel strongly about. As such, a donation of $5,000 from the proceeds of the CD will be made to Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia. The Girls had this to say, “We are so happy to be supporting Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia through this CD of songs we love.

Music enhances the joyful moments in our lives. We really hope it enhances yours.”

The 2CD set will be available from music retailers from Friday 8th April, 2011.

Australia’s most successful Olympian, Ian Thorpe, spoke today for the first time since leaving for overseas in February to train for a comeback at next year’s London 2012 Olympics.

In Herzogenaurach, Germany at Adidas HQ, Thorpe spoke one on one with SKY News sports host James Bracey about his move from Abu Dhabi to Switzerland to train with controversial coach, Russian-born Gennadi Touretski.

“I’ve known Gennnadi for 12 to 15 years. I’ve never actually trained with him. He’s a great technician around stroke, and the programming that he has in place now and what we’ll be doing in the future is fantastic.” Thorpe said, “It’s a good, solid training base.”

When questioned about his times, Thorpe was hesitant to commit to a definitive number, simply saying: “Things are going well. They could be going better, they could be going faster then again they could be going a whole lot slower. I’m happy with where I’m at at the moment.”

The trimmed down athlete admits he’s definitely fitter than he was when he announced his comeback in Sydney seven weeks ago, and puts it down to focusing on general aquatic fitness before his arrival into Switzerland to begin his intensive training regime under Touretski.

Thorpe will now begin his countdown to November when he’ll be officially allowed to compete again and will be closely monitoring his Australian team mates at this weekend’s Telstra Swimming Championships.

When questioned about the London 2012 Olympics, Thorpe said “It’s easy to get excited about what could be – another Olympics for myself – but I’ve got to take the steps back to ‘lets be excited about what’s going on at training’ and have those small victories along the way rather than looking at the bigger picture which would be competing at the Olympics and getting carried away with that. That can be overwhelming.”

The interview with Ian Thorpe can be seen throughout the day on SKY NEWS and SKY NEWS Multi-view.
