Even before the show has aired, Seven have back flipped (again) on the Monday night timeslot for Conviction Kitchen.

Set to premiere tonight (Tue Feb 22), at 9.30pm after Packed to the Rafters, Conviction Kitchen was to move to its regular timeslot of 8.30pm Mondays from next week – Mon Feb 28.

Now, it will remain at 9.30 Tuesdays, meaning that Parenthood will not be seen in the interim. :(

Next Monday, Feb 28 at 8.30 will be Bones, while the following Monday, March 7, 8.30pm is TBA.

Now – I wonder what it was that made Seven change their mind? Was it the fact that Ten are putting House on now at 8.30 Mondays or are they concerned about “feel good” opposition in This Is Your Life on Nine?

Or could it have been the two and a half star review that David Knox gave the show on TV Tonight yesterday that have made Seven decide to leave it after the Rafters?

Honestly, the change is last minute enough – surely they could have at least seen how it rates tonight before making this decision? Just another 24 hours? Yes, Bones will outrate House and yet another show hosted by Eddie, but moving Conviction Kitchen perhaps signifies Seven may not have too much faith in the show.

Third week of official ratings is not even half way through and already, between the three commercial main channels and some of the digitals (namely GO!, GEM and 7mate mostly) we have seen an average of at least one timeslot or program change a day between them all.

And that does not include minor amendments like classification updates or corrections or program story line updates!

The History Channel continues its most ambitious and exciting year of exclusive, local programming with the world premiere of THE IRISH IN AUSTRALIA, to air on St Patrick’s Day at 7.30pm AEDT.

The colourful one-hour special will follow one of Australia’s most popular comedians, Fiona O’Loughlin, as she sets out to discover the history of the Irish in Australia, including the story of her own Irish heritage, which until now she knew little about.

Starting in South Australia where her Irish forefathers first settled, Fiona sets off on her journey by asking the question: “What have the Irish ever done for us?”

Through interviews, re-enactments, visits to key places and archives, THE IRISH IN AUSTRALIA highlights the rich contribution the Irish have made to Australia – and explains what it truly means to be Irish.

In every walk of life, at every stage of Australia’s history, you will find the Irish – it pervades our sport, politics, language, religion, culture and more.

In THE IRISH IN AUSTRALIA, Fiona uncovers a host of fascinating facts about the notable and notorious Irish Australians, from Prime Ministers to the sports field, from criminals to the judge’s bench, from academia and the stage and screen, all who have contributed to Australia and the Australian way of life in so many ways.

Fiona also meets some familiar faces along the way, including writer Thomas Keneally and comedian Dave Callan and visits some significant places where the Irish made their mark, including Vinegar Hill, Glenrowan and the site of the Eureka Stockade.

THE IRISH IN AUSTRALIA is produced by Michael Tear of Bearcage and is exclusive to The History Channel.

American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe has told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they are introducing online voting for Idol this year.

Lythgoe was quoted in saying: “We are going to introduce online voting.”

While a publicist has said that nothing has been confirmed yet, Lythgoe’s comment was affirmative.

There’s no word yet if this will mean international viewers can place votes.

It’s “awards season” and Adam Hills in Gordon Street Tonight is going to the movies.  What with the Grammys, the BAFTAs and the Oscars on the way, Adam has asked the audience to bring in something they’ve won and Hannah Gadsby finds some gems.

Comedian Carl Barron cracks us up with the things grandparents say, and explains how his country upbringing shaped his career; Olympic basketballer Lauren Jackson chats about her international career, being bullied at school, and lets us into some secrets about the physical tussles on the court.

Jon Toogood, lead singer of NZ band Shihad, takes to the stage to perform his version of the Australian Crawl classic, Reckless; and comedian Stephen K. Amos ‘phones it in’ from London.

Jessica Mauboy, who shot to fame on Australian Idol and has since taken Australia by storm, talks about growing up in Darwin, getting just a little bit raunchy with Snoop Dog, and performs her latest single ‘What Happened to Us’.

We follow up with last week’s speed dating couple Susan and Dave; The Royal Australian Airforce band make a surprise appearance and Dave O’Neil ambushes a live theatre performance to give an audience member an acting experience he’ll never forget.

And, what awards night would be complete without some awards – Adam introduces The Gordies!

Adam Hills in Gordon St Tonight screens Wednesday February 23 at 8.30pm on ABC1, and is repeated Saturday February 26 at 7.30pm on ABC2.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has rocked Christchurch, New Zealand, all but destroying the city’s iconic church and causing wide spread damage to the city and surrounds.

Australian TV networks have abandoned regular programming for now to cover this breaking story.

Seven, Nine and Ten all have live news, with reporters on the scene.

Both Sky News and ABC News 24 are using a direct feed of New Zealand’s TV3 for their coverage.

So far, no programming amendments have been issued by any network so it is unclear how long the coverage will continue.

When many people read TV ratings these days, they question why shows are rating lower than they used to. Many chose to explain the reason as being due to poor programming or due to other factors such as downloads or other viewing options.

Fact is, there are now 15 free to air channels competing for viewers. While the main concentration of viewers still remains with the main channels, when you start looking at how many are also watching digital channels and then how many are watching each network, you can clearly see that the total number of viewers for free to air TV has not dropped off at all – if anything – it is on the rise.

But the fact remains – shows on main channels will no longer enjoy the huge figures of years gone by. Only a select few that stand out will draw the huge numbers – two of which are on Seven at the moment, and we all know about Masterchef coming to Ten later this year.

The ratings figures for last night, Monday February 21, were missing shows from ABC2. Therefore, without numerous pre school shows in the digital channel top 50, it allows us to see how the commercial digital channels are performing in more timeslots than we usually see.

The table below shows figures for each of the commercial main channels and the digital channels other than ONE, with a total figure for the network. In the case of TEN, an extra 20,000 is added to the network total as a rough guestimate of the average number of viewers watching ONE throughout the night.

Also – a guestimate had to be applied to GO! from 7.30 – 9.30 – with the movie Excess Baggage being watched by fewer than 62,000. That has been put in as 60,000, although it could actually have been a lot lower. Last night was one of GO!’s worst nights in a long time – with a share of just 1.9%. The poor performing movie even brought down The Vampire Diaries, which was watched by 93,000. Top show on GO! was the Daily Video Show – 111,000.

Message to GO! – time to get rid of the Monday evening movies – they may have worked during school holidays and when there was nothing else on, but not anymore.

GO’s woes aside, the figures basically speak for themselves about Seven’s domination of the night – with the main channel, the digital channels, and the network as a whole exceeding the performance of Nine in all timeslots from 6pm – 9.30pm.

Table: Free to air commercial channels – ratings by the half hour.

Notes:
1. Figures are thousands, so 1329 means 1,329,000
2. ONE HD assumed as average of 20,000 for the whole night.
3. GO! From 7.30 – 9.30 assumed as 60,000 average
4. All figures are averages over the duration of a show. Actual half hourly figures would vary, but the averages still serve the purpose of making the point here.
5. Overruns, late finishes, early starts or any variance to show start and end times are not taken into account here. A start time of 9.40 on 7two is still taken as 9.30. Again the variance would be small and not affect the overall point here.
6. Ratings figures are 5 city OzTam preliminary figures.
