David Attenborough’s THE LIFE OF MAMMALS, an acclaimed series for the BBC, premieres on Channel Nine on Monday, June 30 at 7.30pm.
The Life Of Mammals is a 10-part series that looks at the most diverse group of animals ever to live on earth. Beautifully shot, it follows the story of 4000 species that have outlived the dinosaurs and conquered the most remote corners of the earth.
Join David Attenborough as he introduces viewers to everything from the two-inch pygmy shrew to the enormous blue whale; from the sloth to the swift cheetah; and from the naked mole-rat to the human baby.
“Mammals, those creatures that are furry, warm-blooded and nourish their young with milk, are the most popular of all animals – perhaps because we are mammals ourselves,” says Attenborough. “There are some 10,000 different species, roughly as many as there are birds, but they are much more varied.”
Attenborough makes a worldwide journey of discovery in search of fascinating mammals to illustrate why they are so incredibly successful and diverse. The series begins with ‘A Winning Design’ which looks at the varied species that come under the term mammals.
“Whether mammals lay eggs or give birth to live young, whether their babies develop in a womb or a pouch, they have managed to live almost everywhere. The mammalian body in all its multitudinous variations really is a winning design,” he says.
‘Food For Thought’, the final chapter in this epic tale of evolutionary survival, looks at human beings. Humans appear to be unique amongst mammals – we live in huge cities, walk on two legs and communicate uniquely through language. But how far have we really come from our mammal heritage?
