A premiere Australian drama sets sail on Nine
Thursday, July 5 at 8.30pm

Lisa McCune and Ian Stenlake lead an outstanding cast in the Nine Network’s highly anticipated new drama, Sea Patrol, premiering on Thursday, July 5 at 8.30pm. From the producers of Water Rats and Blue Heelers, Hal and Di McElroy, Sea Patrol is a 13-episode miniseries based on the Royal Australian Navy Patrol Boat Service that protects the country’s vast coastline.

Every hour of every day, in all weather imaginable, young men and women battle the elements and the odds to defend Australia’s borders and enforce its economic zone. Sea Patrol is set aboard a navy patrol boat, the fictitious HMAS Hammersley, and tells the stories of the officers and crew as they tackle the multitude of situations that face the real-life RAN daily.

“Making this series has been a fantastic journey,” said Jo Horsburgh, Nine Network Head of Drama. “Over three years in development we believe the task of bringing together the resources of the Royal Australian Navy with a highly skilled television production cast and crew under the leadership of Hal and Di McElroy has produced an outstanding show for Australians of all ages to take to their hearts.”

Channel Nine’s Executive Director Jeffrey Browne said, “Channel Nine is a proud supporter of Australian drama, and we believe Sea Patrol is one of the best drama series ever produced in this country.”

Featuring an array of great Australian talent, Sea Patrol stars: Ian Stenlake as Lieutenant Commander Mike Flynn (Commanding Officer); Lisa McCune as Lieutenant Kate McGregor (Executive Officer); Saskia Burmeister as Lieutenant Nikki Caetano (Navigator); John Batchelor is Andy Thorpe, or “Charge”; Jeremy Lindsay Taylor is Pete Tomaszewski, “Buffer”; Matthew Holmes is Chris Blake, “Swain”; Kristian Schmid is Robert J. Dixon (Radio Officer); David Lyons is “ET”, Josh Holiday; Josh Lawson is “Chefo”, Toby Jones; and Jay Ryan is Billy “Spider” Webb.

The crew of the HMAS Hammersley are joined each episode by a guest cast that includes Steve Bisley as Commander Steve Marshall; Sibylla Budd as Dr Ursula Morrell; Christopher Stollery as federal agent Greg Murphy; and Martin Lynes as Rick Gallagher, a coastal trader. In what is believed to be a first for a local drama, the entire first episode of Sea Patrol will be available as a free download from ninemsn. From July 2, audiences can get a free preview of the series and watch it on their own computers, three days prior to the television premiere.

An extensive website to complement the series has also been created by ninemsn. Key features include a confessional video blog kept by one of the Hammersley crew and an exclusive “making of Sea Patrol” video diary filmed and narrated on location by cast member Josh Lawson.

Viewers will also be able to purchase the remaining episodes of Sea Patrol after they have screened on Nine via ninemsn’s Catch-Up TV download service. To check out the special features and to access your free download go to seapatrol.ninemsn.com.au.

As a piece of fiction it has`some merit and is getting a little better, but for heavens sake do some research. Last episode we started with a sailor just back from a jog around Nightcliff and the Esplanade without raising a sweat (a bloody marathon). Then the boat sails for a 90 minute trip out of Darwin.

A couple of hours later its back in port and being greeted` by Qld Police.

Previously it has sailed from a Qld port with blue uniformed Qld Police in the story. A couple of hours later its off the NT coast. Bloody fast these Fremantles!!.

Come on writers do a little bit of research because you are making the show look bad.

A great concept is being spoiled.

I couldn't agree more with Geoff. This show is supposed to about the Navy and even though it is entertainment that doesn't give it the right to denigrate the hardwon respect that our female sailors of the RAN have earned. Unless they have a contract already I would be surprised if the Navy provides access to a Naval vessel for the second series. The first ABC Patrol Boat inspired a generation of young people to want to join the Navy and experience the adventure themselves. Sea Patrol inspires nothing but nausea amongst those same people. It just goes to show that there is a dearth of talent in the Aus drama writing field. The only formula they know is put a handful of men and women into an environment be it a police station, a suburban street or now the sea and make them play romance games. Give some innovative writers ago instead of just pinching them from the ABC once the shows have been a success, ie Kath & Kim and now Chaser. Try something new, be leaders. The viewing public is demanding more!!!!! We are sick of this shit

I don't want to appear negative because I think the format has got a lot going for it,so I'd like this to be regarded as constructive criticism.

I've spent most of my working life as a professional seaman, on just about everything but a navy vessel.
I empathise with Geoff. It's not much to ask that they apply some simple protocols that are as instilled as the uniform.
Authority isn't just switched on & off.
I don't know what goes on in the navy, but in the commercial trade where things are pretty laid back, crews still don't fraternise the officers.
It's a fundamental flaw in this show. It's like putting a truck driver in high heels.
I think Ian Stenlake is a sound authoritarian. I think the decision to head up the cast with Lisa McCune is more Blue heelers reputation than charismatic performance. They've just changed uniforms & put her on a boat. Same old same old. No wisdom, just gold braid. So dull & predictable.
Saskia Burmeister could slip straight into Home & Away with her giggly performance. She would be a worry as a steward on the coast.

Tonights episode on the issue with the floating container drove me nuts.
Kristan Schmid was a loose canon. He was all over the ship. A gash we presumed he got off the container that required a dozen stitches & none of them noticed it. To say nothing of him not reporting his injury. You report a migraine if you're in an active role!

For heavens sake, get some starch into the crew & draw some lines.
Get the writers out on a real Patrol boat & see what happens, then build the drama from that.
Surely you can create drama that doesn't rely on crew members at odds with each other half the time.
By the way, fish in the rigging (Mast)??? give us a break.

I have watched each episode of Sea Patrol, whilst it did have some issues I have to say it is improving. The actors seem to be getting into their roles much easier and I find it somewhat refreshing in comparison to some of the garbage served up. It is not meant to be a documentory about the real life on board a navy vessel, it is a drama on television for the entertainment of those who may or may not have navy experience. We all have options to stay with or turn off the program, if its not to your taste then exercise your right.

Good on ya, Geoff, for posting some serious criticism. It's all very well for couch potatoes to tell you to lighten up, but the fact is that a series can be entertaining and accurate simultaneously. With all the Navy advisors available to the Sea Patrol production team and scriptwriters, you'd think they would be able to convey an accurate picture of 21st century navy life without sacrificing drama, personal stories, character development etcetera.

Some of us, and not only Navy personnel, appreciate being informed as well as entertained.

And if you need a new script editor to make it more realistic, show producers, feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to help!

I have just finished watching the first two shows of Sea Patrol or should I say Crap Patrol. I am an ex-RAN DDG and patrol boat Stoker who has been out there in the real world, the real Navy and must say that this show is embarssing to anyone who has served in the senior service. I was hoping that the show would be a true mirror vision on life in the RAN and Patrol Boat Squadron, but once again we are let down by Australian comercial television. About two years ago I caught up with an old Navy mate and we watched a few old shows from the original ABC Patrol Boat series. Now this is good aussie TV that shows what life in the RAN is really like not the plastic crap of Sea Patrol.

I watched the first 2 episodes...I will not be watching the third. The main reason I wanted to see it was to see how it rated against the old Patrol Boat series put out by the ABC all those years ago. Sea Patrol is a steaming pile of dog s--t! Fix the writing and get a new cast and you might be able to salvage something...but other than that it's crap! The acting is wooden and the dialogue is corney. Surely we have better talent in Australia.

Lighten up....it's a ficticious story not a documentary......great easy watching....to all the grouches and whingers - there is an 'off button'....or are you so intense on criticism you haven't learnt where that is yet!! On ya Nine it's great.

We tuned in to watch the show because of all the publicity surrounding it. We miss the old Aussie shows like prisoner and paul hogan. So what did we think of Sea Patrol. With all that money spent surely you could have bought back Who wants to be millionaire. At least you can help the Australian society by giving some lucky Aussies a chance to win something and entertain the rest and by using our minds. To sit through this Sea Patrol is as dull as watching a netball match(sorry to all netballers out there, nothing personal).
It was interesting to note that with all the hype and attention this drama attracted and with all the positive press it received. One of the first stories in the show was a poor woman who died on the boat after being sick on an island.
I wonder if its an omen on things to come for the show. I think it would have been better for the writers to have sunk the boat with the rest of the cast so to save us from any more episodes of this show.

I've just watched the first Sea Patrol. Well I couldnt believe it. Who the hell in the navy told you that Junior Sailors talk to Senior Sailors like they were MATES.I have read that the navy gave some advise to the show makers on how things operated on a patrol boat. Either the show makers didnt listen very well or the advisers were never in the navy. When the Captain of a warship asks his XO "are you ok?' He doesnt want to hear and will not be told "No Im not Ok" Who the hell wrote this script. I have never hear such wimpy limp wristed woffle in my life. This is an embarssment to anyone who has ever serviced in the navy. Officer are expected to lead, senior sailors are expected to know, and Junior sailors do as they are told. Leading hands do not try and crack onto the Navigator. She would have had him charge with insubordination before all the words were out of his mouth. There wouldnt have been a shy girlie smile. Sailors might get frightened at times, but we would never show it, or make the situation worst by having a Tissy fit. This show is far below par with the last show Patrol Boat that the ABC made in the 70s. Sea Patrol portrays women in the navy as girlie. It says that they are not there to do real navy work but just pretty the place up a bit. Lisa's portrayal of an XO is just too stereotyped, "a woman in a man's world". Surely the navy doesnt want to have its members of all ranks and both sexes shown in this light.
What a load of rubbish, havent we grown up yet? I wont be watching anymore of this embarssing crap. Geoff Rossiter
