The only place to see the 2009 Helpmann Awards is live and exclusive on FOXTEL’S Bio channel on Monday July 27, at 8.30pm EST.
The 2009 Helpmann Awards will be broadcast direct from the Opera Theatre at the iconic Sydney Opera House, in a two hour gala spectacular jointly hosted by Jonathan Biggins and Julia Zemiro, both acclaimed actors, broadcasters, and comedians.
This year marks the 9th annual Helpmann Awards and it will be the most glamorous night of the theatre season with dozens of stage and screen stars on hand to present the prestigious awards.
The Ceremony will include special performances by the casts of Avenue Q, Candy Man, Chicago, Jerry Springer – The Opera,
Shane Warne - The Musical, 7 Fingers and Wicked.
Also taking the stage on the night are The Australian Ballet, Sydney Dance Company and Opera Australia.
Similar to the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Olivier Awards in London, The Helpmann Awards annually recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia's vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, dance and physical theatre.
The Helpmann Awards, established in 2001 by Live Performance Australia (LPA) are named in honour of Sir Robert Helpmann to commemorate his memory and achievements.
There are a total of 41 categories at this year’s Helpmann Awards. The Helpmann Awards also incorporate the JC Williamson Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Australian live performance industry. This year the recipients of the JC Williamson Award are John Bell AO OBE and Michael Gudinski AM.
Jon Nicholls is Executive Producer of The 2009 Helpmann Awards and Stuart Maunder will direct the Award Ceremony with Max Lambert as Musical Supervisor and Vanessa Scammell as Musical Director.
