The 2008 V8 Supercar series continues on Seven today with qualifying and race 1 for round 4, the Bigpond 400, live from Perth.

Following the street fight in Hamilton New Zealand, the V8 Supercar circus heads west across the Nullarbor to Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway. The key here is 2.4 kilometres of bitumen that requires respect. For those that stray, deep sand awaits that will ruin their day.

Reigning V8 title holder and hometown hero Garth Tander will be looking to repeat his 2007 dominance after claiming pole and a hat trick of race wins.

It has been almost seven years since Essendon has defeated North Melbourne. However, the Bombers NAB Cup form suggests its development is happening quicker than many thought with Matthew Knights at the helm.

Meanwhile, the Kangaroos fight for survival in Melbourne dominated headlines over the off-season, but most pundits expect North Melbourne’s strong football form to continue following its top four finish in 2007.

Can Matthew Knights’ Bombers take the points in his first AFL Premiership match as senior coach? Or will Dean Laidley’s Kangaroos continue their domination over the Bombers?

Each of the eight participants plays three matches over the four days in a promotion/relegation type format.

It’s traditionally a hard-fought competition especially due to the high calibre of players. Andre Agassi was a firm supporter, competing eight times and winning on three occasions, taking the Australian Open title after each victory.

The 2007 final saw Andy Roddick defeat Roger Federer in front of a sold out crowd.

News 2007 - 2008 Summer of Cricket on Nine

28 Oct Channel Nine's blog | 3 comments | Read more | 4476 reads

In the 2007-08 season the Nine Network celebrates 30 years of cricket coverage since Kerry Packer stormed into the game with the World Season Cricket revolution.

Since then, Australians have tuned in to Nine for their cricket fix and come to regard the network as the home of the game.

Nine’s blockbuster summer of cricket begins when Australia takes on Sri Lanka at the Gabba in Brisbane on November 8. This Test match signals the start of the 2007-08 international cricket season, with Wide World Of Sports broadcasting live and exclusive.

Fresh from victory in the recent one-day series in India, Ricky Ponting’s world champions will be keen to keep their winning streak rolling when they play Sri Lanka at the Gabba. The Aussies want to hammer mercurial Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan who looks certain to beat Shane Warne’s world record of 708 Test match wickets. Trailing by just nine wickets, Murali is expected to break the record in this series.

This season Australia is in a rebuilding phase with fresh blood coming through the ranks since the retirement of Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn last season. New stars have already started to shine in the form of stylish batsman Michael Clarke, exciting fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, and the hard-hitting Andrew Symonds.

THE 2007 MELBOURNE CUP CARNIVAL: Emirates Stakes Day

LIVE COVERAGE

The VRC's No. 1 mile race and the major feature of the final day of Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Some champion horses have underlined their greatness with victory in this event, most notably Vain in 1969, which carried 4.5kg above weight for age to win in his third victory in eight days. This is a wonderful race day but more importantly every year establishes itself further as Family Day where race goers of tomorrow enjoy a fantastic day’s entertainment with their parents.

Channel Seven’s coverage will concentrate on both; for every winner on the track there’ll be some young boy or girl strutting their stuff in kids’ Fashions On The Field and having fun in the sun.

Australia’s foremost television racing host, BRUCE MCAVANEY, will lead the coverage, accompanied by his sidekicks RICHARD FREEDMAN and SIMON MARSHALL. PETER DONEGAN will get the good oil in the mounting yard, PAT WELSH sharing the odds in the betting ring, Melbourne Cup winning jockey JOHN LETTS in the saddle interviewing the winning hoops on course and GREG MILES is race caller.
