Channel Seven sports presenter and former West Coast Eagles dual premiership player Chris Mainwaring has died overnight, from a suspected drug overdose.
Seven Perth's managing director made the following statement: This is a sad day. We are mourning the death of a colleague and friend. Chris was a tremendous footballer, his record with the West Coast Eagles speaks for itself. He was also a talented member of Seven's team in Perth. Chris's death is a tragedy. All of us at Channel Seven Perth and his friends across the Seven Network feel a deep sense of loss. Our heart goes out to Chris's family.
Police and an ambulance were called to Mainwaring's home following a complaint he was yelling in the street at 11.45pm (WST) last night but when they arrived the 41-year-old was calm. About an hour later ambulance officers were called back to find him unconscious.
He was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. Mainwaring, a two-time All Australian and dual premiership winner, played 201 games for the Eagles between 1987 and 1999 and then joined Channel Seven as a news reader and sports reporter after he retired from the game.
Mainwaring leaves behind a wife and two children.
