11.00am Sunday, August 5
This week the Sunday Footy Show holds a special rugby league forum hosted by Andrew Voss, with a cross section of NRL identities discussing the burning issues in the game.
The forum includes NRL CEO David Gallop, CEOs from the Dragons, Titans, Souths and the Storm, the media, current and former players, player-managers, NRL doctors, referees and fans.
Issues surrounding the salary cap take centre stage in this frank and open and often controversial forum, which also focuses on the player exodus to the English Super League as well as rugby union, and wider implications these factors are having on the game.
As well as the forum the Sunday Footy Show will review the Sat night game, analyse Nine’s Friday night-double header, and previews the Sunday game on Nine. Joining Andrew Voss on the panel this week are guest hosts Jason Stevens, David Fairleigh and Mark Riddell.
The Roast follows at 12.00pm, hosted by Andrew Voss, Mark Geyer, Paul Langmack and Terry Kennedy.

hey just a thought tell me what vossy k nows about playing the real game rugby league, rabs nows more about the game, anyway lets stop and think rl use to have packed croweds at every team venue until we stop all games on sunday ,top day with the family at the footy ,but now you have to take out a morgage to go. todays league is about channels making a player does two great things in game hes a super star please.mat rogers is correct about one body for junior league up to senior league , the players today are stuffing the game , who wants 8 teams bring back the real comp nsw only , balmain, wests, easts, norths, parra, penrith, newcastle, saints ,bulldogs, sharks,,manly, souths.now were talking the fans will come back, the nrl cannot compete with other codes just to get sponsors, the game will survive on fans if you look after there teams. the old fokes youst to love going to leichhardt , northsydney and other grounds to watch super stars play not tv stars. i speak to fans when i travel to queensland ,nsw they all say rugby league has to many rules now and its like watching american football stop to look at this and that, the players today would not last with the hits of old you cant even touch there heads now and they fall over like the soccer players , they hurt there fingers and have weeks off, the old man said to me play league it will toughen you up for life and make you extra money whilst having a trade but now its all about im the best and the game wont survive without me. we pick players to play for rep jumpers but some players get picked on names ,thurston teams gonig bad ,injurd for week but stiil ses ill be fine for world cup, just maybe thats why younger players think more of the money and not the jumper. today its all about the money and nothing else,go back to the grass roots .some players think there bigger then the game, make the most of it boys becuase when its time to go your a now body not a tv star

Hey guys
Just noticed on friday night game when willy Mason was penilised in the 37th minute for incorrect marker position. That Willy marked up corectly but the storm player stepped to the side to play the ball. i think the ref should take more notice of this as i, a viewer from home, have noticed it.
Cheers

And while I'm here........
Here's a thought.
Why not use the rugby rule that no one can make a move in the direction of a down field kick UNTIL the kicker puts them on side. The kicker would then need to play deeper to avoid getting "a nudge". The fullbacks and wingers would then be able to open the game up by not having a ring of forwards ( all of whom still HEAD DOWNFIELD TOO EARLY )ready to pounce on them. Imaging how the game would look with Slater, Stewart, Hunt , Bowen, Mini, Campbell and the like running at the gaps.
It would certainly keep my interest a bit longer.

The situation is getting a bit "old news" now but I wanted to comment on the Sonny Bill Williams issue.
Sure the salary cap is a pain, but it has been initiated with valid intentions. Clubs not wanting to toe-the-line can play in the metro league.
Sure 3rd party contracts are a major sticking point. I don't pretend to understand all the paperwork but on the surface it needs more consultation.
Sure Sonny did the dirty on his team mates. He could have handled it better. But if he had, he wouldn't have been able to sneak off as quickly as he did and then would have to face the media in Australia. Not hide out in the French Riviera.( I can only assume his family will be doing it rather tough at the moment.)
All the excuses being bandied about are just a smokescreen. The only issue here, as I see it, is that the NRL has no apparent control over player contracts. A contract is a binding agreement and any player breaking a contract should be accountable for his actions. As should Sonny Bill. But now the NRL are now embarrassed.
It seems to me that they are trying to deflect the bullets. Todd Carney is another example. The allegations against him were dropped but now reports are that the NRL will not register him in 2009 if he fails to agree to the Raiders management. ( Lets get the hysteria up and someone else can take the heat for a while ).
Good on any player that can build a "get-out" clause into a contract and have a club or governing body actually register it. More fool them....... . BUT ... lets not be vindictive about it ( and stop them from ever playing again ). Take them to court, garnish their wages , force NRL promotional visits to the bush, but don't take away their livelyhood. It galls me that fans and employers alike take 'ownership' of players and make it all personal whenever things don't go as they hope. He's 22 for gods sake and has Mundine in his ear......What chance has he got ?
I also find it amusing that Sonny is ready to put 'pen to paper ' in France. That will mean something to someone, somewhere but he is rapidly building a reputation of his own making with deeds both on and off the field. He will eventually be accountable for his decisions. The NRL don't need to bury him to save face. He's already digging the hole.

G'day guys,
I would like to make a comment regarding the use of white, yellow and red cards. If a team continually gives away ill discplined penalties and the use of cards are used who do you send off? The player who is probably unlucky to be done for his first mistake or the captain who obviously has not done his job properly in the first place by telling his team to watch the silly ill discplined plays. I believe the captain should be sent off as he is usually one of the best players in the team. How many times have you seen a captain, once he has been spoken too by the ref, go back and get his team all together and tell them what he had been told by the ref. It never happens as it takes too long and it only holds up the game even more and the refs don't allow them time. So by sending off the captain it gives the attacking team the opportunity they probably should have had in the first place to score points

Hey Gus,
I have to agree with you about your comments regarding referees especially the video refs. While I was watching the Storm/Cowboys game tonite it dawn on me the the main reason we have the video refs was to create a job for Bill Harrigon. I really find it hard to understand why they go to the video ref and still get it wrong especially Harrigon. I listen to "talkin sport" on the radio when I drive home, and on Mondays they have Harrigons comments on some of the decisions the refs made over the week end games, what really piss's me off is when he knows that any ref made the wrong decision his comment is "we have to put our hand up for that one, we got it wrong". Can you imagine that happening in a final or state of origin.
Another example was in tonights game when the Storm score a try the linesman was just about lying on the ground along the player and they still went to the video ref, what a waste of time.
Just on a personal note any chance of you coming out of retirement and coaching my beloved Bunnies I think they need someone like you to motivate them, after all you did play for Souths, and I did see you play a lot and personally I think you were a very good player so come back.
Cheers
John

Hello my name is abbey rich and im 12 years old and am a massive football fanatic!
I support Manly and always have and always will. I'm a huge fan of Brett Stewart and i'm his future wife.....
I have always wanted to meet him in person and not while loads of people are swarming around me.
My Mum went to Manly Leagues and met him. My Aunty said to him we have a future wife for you and asked if he could write a message to me on a TRY poster with the Manly icon and this is what he wrote: To my wife Abbey sorry i missed you tonight Brett Stewart.
I have it laminated and on the wall of my room! My friends are like why don't we get him to be our coach as we want to make an all girls tackle team haha.

If this goes to the footy show, how about everyone stop the manly bias. I'm sick of commentators excusing referees for their inept performances when they shaft Manly week after week with the worst refereing I've seen in over 35 years of watching league.
If Manly happen to get a penalty or close call (such as Rogers, South on Orford) we never hear the end of it, how manly robbed Souths of their season and Manly didn't deserve this or that. Just look at all the decisions in these games and then tell me how Souths were hard done by. The Manly v Souths game 3 weeks ago was an absolute disgrace from Hampstead & Co in the Video Box.
Apparently with Souths being so disciplined (NOT) giving away next to no penalties, especially when it mattered and thier defense as dominate as it was (NOT) they just had to win (BULL*$^%)
Many had about 3 or 4 dominate tackles called in the match and when they had the ball they apparently surrendered in most tackles but not Souths, Manly were ordered off them instantly in just about every tackle but Souths were allowed to lay around in tackles at will. With the amount of ball Souths were given in Manly's quarter and the amount of defense Manly had to do and the speed in which the ref made Manly get off tackles, Souths should have won by 40 but as it was they got home because Manly (Hicks in particular) was exhausted and even with a 5 meter lead didn't have enough in the tank to beat the Souths player to the ball. Defense was refed like origin footy but only for Manly, Souths could lay and flop around in tackles as long as they needed.
What gets me most is that no one wanted to wrap Manly for their effort in defense but bag them for ill discipline(BULL*$&%)
If you look at the Manly penalties most were crap and 3 of Souths tries came from extra sets on the back of those BULL*$^% penalties. But again it was only Manlys ill discipline that cost them not the ref. (according to Voss & Co)
I feel sorry for Souths but no one (MANLY) should be shafted because everyone loves to see them lose. I beleive thats why refs & the league don't care when Manly get shafted because they know that most people want to see that.
After this years footy is over I'm giving it a miss, my family has already stopped watching league and so will I. The league has ruined the game by letting the Refs do what they want and they protectiing them and fining Coaches for airing their disgust.
Just this first Semi week Hagan, Folks and Hasler have every reason to be pissed at the refereeing performances but the league will do nothing again, as usual. Good on ya NRL way to stuff a good thing.

Hello to all of you. I have been wanting to say this for so long and that is I absolutely love the Roast and would be so disappointed if it wasnt on. Secondly re Andrew Johns. Unfortunately I didnt see the interview with him & Phil but I believe Phil Gould was magnificient. When I heard about it the next day I was so devastated for Andrew and his family. Not judgemental, not let down or anything like that, just very very sad for all concerned. Would love to been able to give him a hug. I have suffered from depression for 10-12yrs myself, initially comeing from ending a personally successful amateur sporting life and so I really felt for Andrew and thought to myself how fortunate he is to have a very supportive family & friends around him who will not be judgemental as I believe that to be one of the biggest problems. We say & think to ourselves that we dont care what other people think but when it comes to family & friends we do care really. He now needs a lot of re assurance that he is not being judged on the past and that he is loved for the person he really is. I believe he has more to offer us now than he ever did as a great footballer.
Since this news broke I have wished I had spoken to people/friends/family, maybe thats my goal now. Im sure he feels as light as a feather. Congratulations Andrew Johns.
