This week on Sunday Arts the creator and star of Keating! The Musical, Casey Bennetto stops by to perform two numbers; artists respond to the city of Adelaide in Uneasy; and Fenella Kernebone finds out about Red Tree, a collaboration between a chamber orchestra, a film composer, a children's choir and illustrator Shaun Tan.
Casey Bennetto
Funny-man Casey Bennetto performs two numbers for us in the studio. Bennetto is best known for his work with the incredibly successful stage show Keating! The Musical which won three Helpmann Awards last year for Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Male Supporting Actor. It has had sold out seasons around the country and Keating himself has even turned out to see the show on more than one occasion. Since then, Bennetto has moved his target from the political arena to the sports field, assisting Eddie Perfect with an equally witty and satirical comedy about the infamous sportsman Shane Warne. You can see the final shows of Keating! The Musical at the Glen Street Theatre in Belrose from July 15 to July 26, and the Seymour Centre in Sydney from July 28 to August 24.
Uneasy Adelaide, stately city of churches and home to one of our greatest arts festivals. And yet, there's another, darker side to her elegant sandstone streets to which a litany of unsavoury crimes over many decades will attest. Author Salman Rushdie once wrote of Adelaide's 'grim enigma', and now a new exhibition addresses the city's dark side. Artists' responses to the city can be seen in the exhibition, Uneasy which is on at the Samstag Museum in Adelaide till August 17.
The Red Tree
It's not often that a chamber orchestra, a film composer, a children's choir and an illustrator team up to create a new cross media work. But that didn't deter the Australian Chamber Orchestra's Richard Tognetti when he embarked on The Red Tree project just over a year ago. The inspiration for this new Australian work came from a book written by multi-award winning graphic novelist, Shaun Tan. Richard Tognetti invited young film composer Michael Yezerski and the Gondwana children's choir to collaborate on The Red Tree project. Tan's images are projected onto a screen while music is performed by the choir.
