This week on Sunday Arts, Fenella Kernebone meets Australia's Julius Avery who has just taken out a Jury Prize at the 61st Cannes Film Festival. The program also features Hijacked, an amazing home-grown photography project.
Julius Avery
Julius Avery still can't believe his luck, at only 29 years of age he has just bagged himself a prize at perhaps the world's most prestigious film awards. He has just returned to Australia after winning the Jury Prize at the 61st Cannes Film Festival for his short film Jerrycan. The award signifies big things for this young Melbourne filmmaker, who hopes that it will fast track his career in feature film making. His 13-minute film is a semi-autobiographical account of the boredom that he experienced growing up in a small country town. It's about a boy living in Clunes who, due to peer pressure, decides to blow things up. You can see Jerrycan for yourself in July at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
Hijacked
Mark McPherson has just created what some people are calling the "most important book of photographs to come out of Australia in the last 5 years". An impressive feat, especially considering the project started off as an Honours thesis and was put together in his lounge room in Fremantle. His book, Hijacked looks to the future of contemporary photography by paying close attention to new and emerging photographers. What emerges from the book is a focus on subcultures, alternative lifestyles and the urban landscape.
McPherson has launched the book at exhibitions in Berlin, Paris, Stuttgart and New York, and recently in Australia with an exhibition at the Australian Centre for Photography which runs until July 19.
Sunday Arts will be repeated on ABC2 - Sunday, July 13 at 7:30pm
