American Idol

In 11 seasons, this is the first time the audition train has headed to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s the city of champions so can it produce the next American Idol?

First up tonight is Korean Heejun Han. When he finally opens up and sings How Am I Supposed to Live Without You everyone is so surprized by how he sounds. I think everyone was expecting another William Hung. He is SO through to Hollywood.

Reed Grimm scats it up through the theme of Family Matters.  Steven Tyler thought it was genius. It’s a gazillion percent yes from Jennifer Lopez and everyone else is totally on board after he had them eating them out of the palm of his hand.

Next up is a montage of golden ticket winners, Aaron Marcellus and Chase Likens and others leaving the crew wondering if they should have come to Pittsburgh sooner.

Samantha Novacek has the help of her sister who planks while she sings Like We Never Loved at All. They all love her but I hope this isn’t going to be something we see all the way to the finals.

Next up is Creighton Fraker who took a nine hour bus ride from New York to be here. He couldn’t decide what to sing so he wrote something on the way. Steven thought it was genius again. He sings Who’s Loving You and amazes the judges.  It’s unanimous. We’ll be seeing more of him in Hollywood.

15 year old Eben Franckewitz has his entire journey in the family car to the auditions played to us before we finally get to hear him sing Ain’t No Sunshine and he is being compared to Justin Bieber.

Travis Orlando is back again this year and he sings Isn’t She Lovely. Before we get to hear what the judge’s verdict is, we hear his story about how his mother left him and his family after Idol aired last year.  They think he’s worth another shot.  Hollywood, he’s coming back!

Day 2 starts with Mobile DJ and wedding singer Erika Van Pelt who has a beautiful husky tone and is very good as she delivers Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. She’s going to Hollywood too!

Isn’t it so good to not have to listen to the dreadful will-never-be’s tonight?  More and more futures are looking golden with the number of tickets to Hollywood flying out the door.

Next up is coal miner, Shane Bruce. He auditions with Hallelujah.  To be honest, he sounded a lot better when he was singing in the mine. The judges want him to come back but he’s not going through this time. He’s pretty upset about it.

The final audition of the day belongs to Hallie Day who has a story to tell. She was in a girl group in New York, got in debt, became an addict and eventually attempted suicide. She’s now married to the man who helped save her. She sings I Will Survive. She’s good. Very good.  She is given a deserved golden ticket.

The steel city delivered 38 golden tickets. Next stop is San Diego, California on Wednesday.

Where were you on the day it all started and thousands of dreams were born? 10 years in the making. Kids who were 6 years old when Kelly Clarkson was first crowned American Idol will tonight get their chance to audition for their shot at becoming the next American Idol.

One of the new introductions for 2012 is contestant cam.  It will chronicle their journies from their perspective. Fun times.

Tonight the auditions start in Savanah, Georgia and Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are back for the 11th season.

First up is 17 year old ladies man David Leathers Jr who beat last year’s winner, Scotty McCreery in a competition in 2009. He sings Remember the Rain. He’s very good. They want to hear him sing some Michael Jackson so he delievers Never Can Say Goodbye. It’s a unanimous and resounding yes to start the show.

Gabi Carrubba has been dancing since she was a toddler. And wow she can sing as well. Her rendition of Sunday Morning is truly a delight. As the judges all say, she was born to do this.

It’s a great start to the show with Brianna Faulk Neco Starr getting through with Grenade, Molly Hunt with You’re No Good and Elise Testone all making it through.

Ryan Seacrest look-a-like Shaun Kraisman isn’t going through but should audition for Ryan’s job if in fact he makes this his last season.

Shannon Magrane brings something a little different with Good Feeling. Considering she auditions in front of her entire family with no nerves, she’s amazing. She’s through to Hollywood with another golden ticket.

It’s time for some of those ear achingly bad auditions.  Even though they look beautiful, they certainly don’t sound it.

Amy Brumfield lives in a tent out in the middle of the woods. She sings Super Woman and she has a better than average voice but she lacks any real power in her voice. Her story will get her through. Sure enough, it’s out of the tent and off to Hollywood. She jokes that she’d like to pitch a tent behind the mansion if she makes it that far.

Joshua Chavis has a dream to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a Nascar race. He’ll probably have about as much luck with that as he did with his audition! Hahaha!

Someone who is a little nasally when they sing is Stephanie Renae. She sings the song Carrie Underwood sang when she won, Inside Your Heaven.  Randy says not yet but the other two are in so she’s through to Hollywood.

Schyler Dixon and her brother audition together. She sings Fallin’ to Pieces, while her brother Colton sings Permanent. They’re both very good and both very through to Hollywood.

Lauren Mink works with people with disabilities. She sings Country Strong and again we hear Jennifer Lopez say “Goosies”.  She’s through with another golden ticket.

Day 2 begins with a pretty bad start.

Ashlee Altise sings and dances her way through Come Together.  She’s quirky.  It’s three yeses.

W.T. Thompson has taken a huge risk by quiting his job to pursue his dream. Considering he has a baby on the way with his wife, this is likely to be a situation full of a lot of regret or a lot of joy.  It’s not unanimous but he’s heading through to Hollywood after winning Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson over with Boondocks.

Next up is a segment of girls with the hots for Steven Tyler. Erica Nowak thinks he is her next ex-husband. After a couple of butt squeezes, she’s thankfully sent on her way.

NBA dancer Brittany Kerr is gorgeous and she sings Could Have Been You and the guys are in but Jennifer Lopez isn’t on team Kerr. I hate how the looks can get lack of talent through the audition process yet you know will go home the first day in Hollywood.

Finally tonight is Phillip Phillips and yes, that is his real name. He sings Superstition in his own special way before they ask him to pick up his guitar and he bust out a country version of Thriller.  Amazing.  Randy says he’s a true artist.  It’s unanimous, leaving Savanah with a total of 42 singers through to Hollywood

Updated October 27, 2011.

American Idol‘s Crystal Bowersox has become a murder suspect. In an upcoming episode of Body of Proof, Bowersox plays Zoe Brant, a troubled young woman who gets questioned by Megan (Dana Delany) and Bud (John Carroll Lynch) as they look into the death of a champion equestrian.

“She’s a bad girl with a good heart, kind of like me,” says Bowersox, “I’m more of a good girl now with a good heart, but I used to be [like Zoe], though I don’t know what it’s like to be incarcerated at all. I know nothing about it. My juvenile record is sealed so it’s all good.”

All kidding aside, though, Bowersox says she did draw from real life — specifically, her close relationship with her son — to help her prepare for her role. “Zoe was incarcerated for drug dealing, and she’s on some kind of work-release program [where she gets to see] her young daughter,” Bowersox explains. “I could not imagine what it would be like to be locked up for a bad decision and not be able to see my child. I can hardly go a weekend playing a show without missing him like crazy, so I drew my inspiration from the things I could find in common with the character.”

While the Idol runner-up attended a performing arts high school, she admits her acting résumé was a little sparse before Body of Proof producers contacted her about auditioning. “I was really insecure about it. I’d never done anything like this before,” says Bowersox, who remembers getting “a really great piece of advice about acting” from Lynch in between takes. “He said, ‘As long as you’re telling the truth, you have nothing to worry about.’ And I kind of thought on that for a minute, about telling the truth from someone else’s perspective,” Bowersox explains. “Acting isn’t necessarily pretending. It’s storytelling. It’s giving someone your perspective on something.”

That said, “I felt pretty guilty when I was being interrogated,” she adds with a laugh.

Still, are there parallels between her Body of Proof gig and her day job? “You have to learn to draw the same emotion you had when you wrote a song every time you perform it,” Bowersox says. “Acting is the same way: You have to find those emotions and bring them to the surface, and then put them back when you’re done.”

In addition to “learning a lot” from Delany and Lynch, Bowersox notes there were other perks from her time on set. “I got to see so much behind-the-scenes stuff,” she recalls. “It wasn’t like working with the makeup artists on Idol. There were pictures on the wall of the trailer with all the gory makeup and horror-film stuff that the artists had done before, and I was just infatuated with it.”

With her acting debut imminent, Bowersox says she’s well aware of the doors Idol has opened for her. “[Body of Proof] was a great opportunity for me,” she says. “There are actors who wait in lines for auditions and callbacks and screen tests, and I walked right on and screen-tested and they liked it. I’m very lucky for that.”

Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson will return for the 11th season of the reality singing competition, that is already being promoted in the States, with 3 months to go.

It will be intresting to see how it rates next year with the market awash with these shows, including America’s Got Talent, The Voice and Simon Cowell’s The X Factor. Even though Aussies can’t vote it usually pulls in solid ratings for Fox 8.
