If there was a Logie for the most thanked TV executive, it would have to go to Ten’s chief programmer, David Mott.

Just about every acceptance speech made by a Ten personality or winner made mention of David Mott – who truly has to be seen as the driving force behind Ten at the moment.

David Mott, unlike commercial rivals Seven and Nine, understands the philosophy of letting shows build audience and growing brands over time as opposed to the concept of instant or overnight ratings success. Mott has persisted with the 7PM Project despite the show being written off by many as unwatchable. Seven and Nine tend to react quickly to ratings, rescheduling or axing shows that do not rate well (actually – Ten does as well but not to the degree of the other two. Supernatural and Stargate Universe are two classic examples).

Over time, the 7PM Project has grown, despite previously having ratings as low or even lower at times then the sitcoms Ten had tried to fill the 7pm void. Carrie Bickmore’s win for most outstanding new talent will only help grow the show further. The 7PM Project would have been axed within a week or two if it was on Seven or Nine.

And then there is Masterchef – an idea that David Mott gave a go despite a lot of negativity of how that sort of show would work on Australian prime time commercial TV. Granted – the UK version which was the original concept is nothing compared to ours – but look how it turned out! Now amongst the most watched shows on television and has helped transformed reality TV in Australia.

Ten may not lead the overall ratings but they are successful in their own right and do meet their primary objectives of leading the younger demographics, despite the fact that GO has eaten into some of that share.
