NEW TO 7TWO

Arthur Gilder is ready to hand over the reins of his doctor’s practice to his son, Tom. But this is the 1950s, and when Tom moves his wife and children to the Lancashire village of Ormston from the hustle and bustle of Manchester, he also brings with him a sense of dynamism and change which Arthur doesn’t embrace with open arms.

Arthur clings to his old-fashioned, tried and tested ways whereas Tom is determined that the hospital should adapt or die. And to complicate matters further, Tom’s old flame Linda is very, very pleased to see him despite the fact that she is about to marry his best friend.

In tonight’s premiere episode: Dr Tom Gilder returns to Ormston, after having lived and worked in Manchester for several years, to be best man at the wedding of his best friend, Len Cosgrove, and his former sweetheart, Linda. Whilst there, his father, Arthur, who runs the village surgery and cottage hospital, tells him of his intention to retire. Tom is aghast, knowing how long and hard Arthur has worked to build up the practice. The gossip soon spreads, but many of the villagers know better than to believe Arthur – they think he must have a trick up his sleeve. On the day of the wedding, not everything goes according to plan.
