Burn Notice

Some changes to ONE coming up for the week of Jan 8 -14 with Monday nights being over taken by comedy.

On Monday January 9, ONE will feature improvisational comedy game show Who’s Line is it Anyway? hosted by Drew Carey. Two episodes will air from 7.30pm, replacing Psych.

At 8.30 that night will be the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Presents: The Comedy All Stars Caberet, pushing Burn Notice out, and moving Blue Bloods back to 10.00pm.

Burn Notice fans fear not – especially as they have just reached episodes we haven’t seen – Michael and Fiona move to Wednesday nights at 8.30, replacing COPS: Adults Only which has held that timeslot for most of the time since ONE changed it format.

Psych fans, however – no good news as it appears to have disappeared from the schedule altogether – that’s not to say it won’t turn up on ONE or even ELEVEN in another timeslot, there just isn’t information on that yet.

The comedy night on ONE on Monday night is no doubt an experiment to see how it goes. The Comedy specials that air from time to time on Ten do OK – whether ONE lifts ratings on what has been one of its lower rating nights as a result, is to be seen.

Non-ratings, however, is usually the time for networks to give things a go to see how the audience reacts. These days though, we see more reactionary programming clutching for every last ratings point that we do bold and interesting programming moves to see what viewers chose – even though officially it is summer non-ratings.

UPDATE: Same programming for Monday nights with Burn Notice on Wednesday nights continues the following week Monday January 16 and Wednesday January 18, 2012.

Ten corrects the episode of new Modern Family they are airing this week (it was previously slated as the second episode of the third season, not the first), removes An Idiot Abroad and advises what the Friday movie will be.

On Tuesday at 7.30pm, the new episode of Modern Family has changed to “Dude Ranch. Previously, the network had the episode as “When Good Kids Go Bad” – the second episode of the third season. The new episode is still followed by a repeat at 8pm “Halloween”.

An Idiot Abroad Gone. Perhaps a lesson for Ten here. An Idiot Abroad originally aired on ONE, where it pulled better figures than it got on Ten last week. Considering the series had already aired twice on ONE, did Ten really think it would pull main channel ratings figures on Ten?

What comes out of this, is 1) close to 90% of all people in the five cities now have digital, most of them HD (remember ONE is an HD channel) – so those who would have wanted to see An Idiot Abroad already have. 2) What happened to not bouncing shows between the channels like Nine / GO! and GEM do? and 3) Ten had the perfect opportunity to fast track right into season 2: An Idiot Abroad Bucket List – which would easily have pulled figures 500,000+ – enough to keep it in a 9.30pm main channel timeslot.

Replacing an Idiot Abroad at 9.30pm Wednesdays, is – wait for it – NCIS repeats.

To Ten’s troubled Friday night, and the movie this week will be Catch Me if You Can at 9.30pm, with American Dreamz at the same time the following Friday (November 4).

Over to ONE, and next Monday October 31 sees new episodes of Burn Notice at 8.30pm, plus Blue Bloods at 9.30pm being given the chance to be played out.

Ten’s Friday night is one of the most unstable nights of programming in Australian free to air TV. It seems that no matter what they air on a Friday night, they simply don’t attract an audience, and the network is prone to react to the low figures by chopping and changing programming.

However, it is this very chopping and changing of programming that is to Ten’s detriment. You never know what you will get on Ten on Friday night, and, when they do try something new there, you never know if it will be on for anymore than a few weeks before they take the show off.

Friday nights on Ten in 2011 have featured new episodes of Law & Order, Blue Bloods, Burn Notice, repeats of Hawaii Five-O, Terra Nova encores and movies amongst others. The night has been so erratic, that nothing has lasted there for anymore than a few weeks.

The usual argument is that the network needs to respond to ratings, and that their core demographic is out on Friday nights. Sure – people do go out on a Friday night, but alot are also watching TV on Friday nights. Better Homes and Gardens on Seven dominates Friday night ratings, while digital channels like GO! and 7TWO reach large audience shares on Friday night.

So what should Ten do to gain audience on Friday nights? (and for that matter, Saturdays as well).

Well, firstly, commit to stability. Schedule the night, and let shows run their course without changing so often. As for movies? Ten simply don’t have enough titles to entice viewers without regular repeats. What ever they do, they need to accept that ratings will usually be lower on weekend nights, but if they program wisely, and don’t change the schedule every few weeks, the people are there for the taking. Maybe it is time to program weekend nights like weekdays, and air new programming?

The people are there – but they are not going to watch repeats of shows that have only recently aired or movies they have seen many times before. Encores should be left for the digital channels – one of my great disappointments with Terra Nova is not being able to see it in HD. Ten should have encored it on ONE in HD instead of the late night Friday night reply on Ten.

That aside, here is a list of ideas of what Ten could do on Friday nights to attract viewers. Some of these ideas are out there – but what do they have to lose in trying? These ideas could extend to Saturday as well, now that there will be no more AFL on Ten next year.

In no particular order…

1. Play out new shows and stick to it. No more repeats. The addition of the weekend nights give more timeslots available for new titles.

2. Animation night. Take the best of ELEVEN’s animation night and do it on Ten on Friday night – mostly for the benefit of those who don’t have digital and don’t see anything on ELEVEN.

3. Best of the digitals night – why stop at animation – play some of the shows that aired on ELEVEN and ONE during the week on Ten (and some of Ten’s on ONE in HD!). Shows like Supernatural, currently airing on ELEVEN on Monday nights, will find a wider audience on Ten. It could easily fit into a weekend timeslot on Ten.

4. Actually MAKE something for Friday night to air at say 8.30. A light comedy show? Light entertainment / variety? Reality elimination? If Pay TV can make shows exclusively for their own channels that reach a fraction of the audience of the free to air main channels, then surely making content for lower audiences could be a consideration for a network like Ten.

5. I have always wondered how Aussie scripted drama like RUSH would do on a Friday night with less competition from rival broadcasters? It couldn’t do any worse than on a Thursday night. Yes, I know, alot of the show’s fans are out, but you never know. It is last season for Rush anyway, but it is a good example.

6. Retro night. Programming from 90′s, 80′s or even 70′s? There is ALOT of content from the past we do not see now despite day time schedules of digital channels, most notably 7mate and ELEVEN, being filled with old TV shows. There is alot of Australian content from the past that never sees the light of day again (although I believe this has mostly to do with the expense of royalties when these shows air).

7. Do a deal with Foxtel and show some content usually only seen on Pay TV. Foxtel keep first to air rights, but Ten air later. Rove: LA for example would fit well on Ten. True Blood on a Friday night on Ten? Could get tricky with who owns what rights, but it is an idea.

8. Ask the viewers what they would like to see on Friday nights. Like radio stations do with listener surveys, why not try the same with TV? Listener surveys of the 1990′s in radio helped the Austerio network in particular gain traction and make its way to the number one music network in Australia.

What do you think? What would you like to see on Ten on Friday and Saturday nights. Do you even watch TV on those nights? Would you watch more free to air on the weekend if the content was there?

Feel free to comment and join the discussion.

W – BURN NOTICE (Season 3, Episode 1) Commercial Free Double Episodes at 8.30pm
Jeffrey Donovan stars as Michael Weston, a blacklisted spy who uses his special training to help people in trouble who,
for various reasons, can’t go to the police. Catch the entire third season before the W premiere of Season 4 this
summer.

After being pushed out of the Ten schedule in favour for repeats of NCIS, The Defenders will air on ONE from this Thursday night August 18 at 9.30pm.

UPDATED: As a result, Breakout Kings – a show ONE had hyped up as the next Prison Break (yet nowhere near as good) moves to late Friday nights, airing at 11.30pm this Friday August 19 and 11.00pm next Friday August 26. ONE programming for August 19 including UFC falls back an hour to make room for the show.

Just last week here on Throng, we suggested that shows like Burn Notice and The Defenders that have been moved out of Ten’s main channel schedule should move to ONE (or ELEVEN) rather than just having the fans miss out.

Burn Notice comes to ONE on Monday August 29 at 8.30pm (although it is not clear which episode yet – hopefully it takes off from where Ten left it) while The Defenders will air on ONE at 9.30pm Thursday August 18.

Breakout Kings now on Friday nights late night 11.30 this week, 11.00pm next.

While Ten continue to struggle in ratings expect more fine tuning and adjustments between their channels to maximise ratings potential.

We love playing musical programming!

This is the third time in a week I have written here on Throng about shows being bumped and how they show be rescheduled. Both Burn Notice and The Defenders have now moved from Ten to ONE. Breakout Kings and 24 on ONE have moved timeslots to accomdate the extra shows.

Coincidence? I wonder!

Maybe time for you all to submit your wish list of shows that have been taken out of the schedule of Ten, ONE and ELEVEN to see if we can get them re-scheduled somewhere over their network!

Blue Bloods, White Collar, Medium, Smallville and 90210 are just a few that come to mind.

We’ll keep you posted.

More  programming changes from Ten – this time, ONE gets some changes.

From Monday August 29, Burn Notice will air on ONE, at 8.30pm, replacing 24 which moves to Tuesdays at 10.30pm from August 30. No details about whether it is new or repeat episodes.

Burn Notice is made in HD, so there may be a chance the show will air in HD on ONE.

Also new to ONE, is a replay of Can of Worms at 9.30pm Tuesdays from August 30.

Burn Notice last aired on Ten on Friday nights before the network took it off due to poor ratings.

Just earlier this week in the story about The Defenders being bumped, I wrote that Burn Notice should air on ONE.

No rescheduling details for The Defenders yet.

Burn Notice – ONE Mondays 8.30pm from August 29.

Burn Notice

After first being scheduled to air on Ten in Sydney only on Saturday nights, while everyone else gets AFL, Burn Notice is now scheduled for a Friday night timeslot nationally at 9pm after Masterchef Masterclass. It kicks off on Friday June 24 at 9pm with an episode called Eyes Open in which Michael tries to stop a lawyer who is killing gang members out of revenge.

As for Sydney, it seems Ten will stick to movies now from 8.30pm Saturdays.

Double the Offspring.

On Wednesday June 22, Ten will play an additional episode of Offspring at 8.30pm, in the timeslot vacated by the Glee finale Wednesday June 15. Offspring, which is now officially renewed for a third season, also remains in its usual timeslot of Monday nights 8.30pm.

Now: Given the issues Ten have had this year with double episodes, multiple night scheduling and timeslot changes, why would they risk messing with their most successful Australian drama at this point in time? And what will happen for the following week – surely Offspring twice a week will rush through episodes too quickly and will risk diminishing the audience.

ELEVEN

Nurse Jackie Finale

The season 3 finale of Nurse Jackie airs on ELEVEN Tuesday June 21, 9.30pm.

Wilfred Premiere

And replacing Nurse Jackie from Tuesday June 28 on ELEVEN at 9.30pm is Wilfred.

Law & Order: SVU Double

Thursday June 9 sees two new episodes of Law & Order: SVU from 8.30pm. Law & Order: Criminal Intent was to air at 9.30pm, but Ten have changed their minds on that one.

No love for Burn Notice on Ten.

SYDNEY ONLY. Even though it was set to air only in Sydney from Saturday June 11, Ten have dumped plans to air new episodes of Burn Notice for this weekend. Ten have also replaced Oprah with Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation repeats at 7.30pm on Ten in Sydney. The Hawaii Five-O repeat is also out at 8.30pm with movies now to air from 8.30 on Ten. The movie for June 11 will be X Men.

Come on Ten, time to show Burn Notice on ONE in HD isn’t it? Perfect fit for the new ONE.

At this stage, Burn Notice is scheduled for 9.30pm Saturday June 18 in Sydney – but, in light of the June 11 change, Burn Notice may not air. Stay tuned…

More extended Masterchef.

Seems to be the big thing in 2011 – 90 minute episodes of shows that usually run for an hour. Masterchef on Sunday June 12 will be a 90 minute episode. Monday June 13, also a 90 minute episode.

Glee season finale.

Airs Wednesday June 15 on Ten, at 8.30pm.

New York: New Directions hit the Big Apple, ready to win Nationals! From Central Park to the Empire State Building, our favourite Gleeks pay homage to New York City the only way they know how, in song.

An Idiot Abroad goes to Egypt.

Monday June 13, ONE, 8.30pm: One of ONE’s top rating shows now: Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send reluctant traveller Karl Pilkington on a trip to Egypt to see the Great Pyramids. After heavy fog thwarts his first visit to the pyramids, Karl is forced to spend some time with the locals before returning to the ‘wonder’. He tries out a traditional Egyptian outfit, experiences Cairo nightlife, and comes across a restaurant whose staff are all deaf.
